5 Wonders of Love Around the World

Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. For some, that means spending quality time with your sweetheart and reflecting on love. For me, it means spending quality time with Chinese takeout and reflecting on my love of dumplings.

Still, even from the depths of singledom, I can’t help but get a little excited for a day all about love. So, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d share some love-themed wonder from around the world.

5 Ways to Help You Hear God in Your Dreams

We all dream. We all have the capacity to dream. “But I never remember my dreams,” people often say. You can. Especially if you open yourself up to them. And just as God spoke to both Josephs in the Bible, you can listen for God speaking to you.

Here are a few things you can do to help yourself hear God in your dreams.

1) Write Your Dreams Down
First thing, as soon as you wake up. Type them into your phone or scribble them down in a dream journal. Do the same if you wake up in the middle of the night with a dream. The scrawl might be hard to read…but it’ll be there.

Moreover, the practice of looking for and listening to dreams will become part of your daily—and nightly—spiritual work. Like anything with God. When we seek God, we find God. And God finds us.

2) Ponder Them
When you have your dreams stored in a place, like a dream journal that you can return to again and again, you have a record to pore over. Themes will emerge, symbols will repeat themselves. A tree, a song, a word, a beloved person. The unconscious made conscious.

3) Share Your Thoughts
You are the one God is communicating with in the dream. You are the final expert on it, God’s love letter to you. But to help you understand what might be there, find someone you can trust to share your dream with.

A friend, a loved one, your pastor perhaps or even an analyst who is practiced and trained in the work. They can ask questions to help you make connections you might not otherwise make. Maybe there is a beloved pet in a dream. You will talk about that dog or cat or bird or whatever it is. And memories, meaningful memories, will surface.

4) Pray Through a Dream
First thing in the morning I sit on our sofa and pray. Often enough, I bring up a dream that I had. “God, let me hear what You’re telling me.”

Dreams can be mystifying, complex, confusing. “God,” I’ll think, “why can’t You be more direct?” And yet it is that very indirection that can open us up. When Jacob lay his head on a rock for a pillow, did he ever expect to see angels ascending and descending from heaven? No wonder he prayed as soon as he woke up, filled with wonder, fear and awe.

5) Be Patient with Your Dreams
The best relationships in our life grow over time. We learn more and more about our loved ones as they learn more themselves. Just when you think you knew them inside-out, they’ll tell you something completely unexpected and dear.

Similarly, our relationship with God grows with time. In the last three nights I’ve had several dreams about Bible study and meditation. It feels like a nudge from God about how I need to spend this Lenten period of reflection and growth. To keep myself focused on the divine.

5 Ways to Discover More Miracles Around You

I write a biweekly column called ‘Life is Mysterious’ for The Greenville Sun. It’s all about the miracles, big and small, that I encounter in everyday life. Sometimes people ask me, “Ella, how can I attract more miracles?”

I don’t have a foolproof method for producing miracles (I wish!). But there are some things you can do to be more open to the miracles all around you.

Here are my five steps for seeking out the wondrous in life.

Step 1: Stay Connected
We are all connected and it is the connections you make with people that facilitate the mystery. Being open to making new friendships gives you a bigger circle of people to allow God to work through. So go ahead. Talk to the cashier at the checkout counter, strike up a conversation with the person in front of you at the DMV, buy a coffee for a stranger. You never know what it might lead to.

Step 2: Forget About Outcomes
The more attached you are to the way you think things should be, the more disappointed you’ll be if things don’t work out the way you expect. Imagine for a minute that you’ve been invited to someone’s house for a steak dinner. When you get there, you discover the hosts decided to serve meatloaf instead. You’d probably be disappointed. Meatloaf is great, but it’s no steak, after all.

Now imagine that same dinner invitation, except this time the hosts didn’t tell you what they were serving. Even if you didn’t like meatloaf, you’d probably be touched—instead of disappointed—that they made something from scratch just for you. It’s the same with life. Try not to put too much stress on outcomes and just enjoy life for the miracle it is.

Step 3: Keep Your Eyes Open
Once you’ve mastered the art of not being attached to a certain set of desired outcomes, you’re free to see clearly the miracles happening right before your eyes. Keep your eyes and your heart open to receiving them. Take a walk in nature, let yourself laugh hysterically at a good joke, enjoy the beauty in a sunset and the mere fact that you’re alive. Sometimes those who say miracles never happen to them just don’t know how to keep their eyes open to the right things. But if you seek out the miracles in life, you’ll find them lurking all around.

Step 4: Live in Gratitude
People talk about it all the time, but what does it actually mean to live in gratitude? For me, it’s a running list that I keep in the back of my mind. An inner voice that quietly reminds me of how blessed I am. Even when things go wrong, I’m always searching for silver linings. And you know what? I almost always find them.

Step 5: Be the Miracle
Last, but not least, be someone’s miracle. Sometimes all it takes to brighten someone’s day is a smile or holding open the door. Spread a little cheer and wonder in the world, then wait and see the wonders that come back to you as a result.

5 True Hollywood Stories Too Incredible for the Movies

“How quickly we grow accustomed to wonders,” wrote the famed movie critic Roger Ebert. “We who can see the stars every night glance up casually at the cosmos and then quickly down again, searching for a Dairy Queen.”

In Hollywood, these “wonders” tend to be special effects, illusions on the silver screen. But for five of Hollywood’s elite, unexpected wonders burst through the veneer of everyday life and provided a very real glimpse of something even more powerful than Harvey Weinstein…

5 Tips for Making the Most of the Nighttime

Most people don’t think of waking up in the middle of the night as a good thing. But the late night and early morning hours can actually be a very spiritual time. In fact, God might be waking you up at night for a reason.

So how can you make the most of the nighttime and early morning hours? Here’s what 5 experts had to say…

1. Turn off the lights

Many people are afraid of the dark. But Clark Strand, author of Waking Up to the Dark: Ancient Wisdom for a Sleepless Age, has been willingly waking up in the middle of the night since he was a kid. He says that prior to the Industrial Revolution, and the dawn of artificial light, the late night and early morning were often times of great wonders and mystical experiences.

BROWSE OUR SELECTION OF BOOKS ON PRAYER

To tap into those wonders in our modern, light-filled age, Strand recommends first turning off as many lights as you can prior to bedtime.

“Start small,” he says. “Begin to let yourself experience the dark more. Turn off a few lights. You’ll become aware of how they affect you and how soothing it can be to have a dimmer place to be at night. You’re not giving up electric light so much as you’re gaining the comfort of the dark.”

2. Ask God to speak

The late night and early morning hours have historically been important to the great monastic traditions. Brother Aidan Owen, a Benedictine monk, regularly rises at 4 a.m. to pray. If you wake up in the middle of the night, he recommends taking a hint from Samuel in the Bible and asking God to speak.

“If you can go back to sleep, go back to sleep,” Owen says. “But if you wake up and can’t go back to sleep, that’s the perfect opportunity for prayer. Get quiet, consciously connect to the body, breathe deeply. Instead of being afraid or annoyed, take a deep breath and say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ And see what happens.”

In addition to praying, keeping track of any particularly vivid dreams that occur at night can also be spiritually illuminating.

“Recording your dreams is a very helpful way to make the nighttime sacred,” Owen says. “When you go to bed, you can make the intention and say, ‘I’d like to remember my dream tomorrow.’ When we’re able to pay attention to our dreams, we can often get a lot more insight into what’s going on within us.”

3. Listen and pray

According to David R. Smith, a Baptist pastor and author of Christianity…It’s Like This, God can speak at any time of the day. But he could be calling you at night to get your attention, even if you don’t understand why. Don’t brush it off, Smith says. Instead, ask yourself why God would wake you from a deep sleep. And, if there’s something on your mind, pray about it.

“If God calls you to pray in the middle of the night, then pray,” Smith says. “You’re going to lose sleep even if you don’t listen, and lie there tossing and turning instead. So you might as well pray. God’s not going to wake you up for no reason.”

4. Channel your creative spirit

The night can also provide the perfect opportunity for engaging your spiritual and creative sides since there are fewer distractions when the world around you is sleeping. That’s one reason Rabbi Eve Ilsen specifically uses the late night hours for activities like prayer, meditation, drawing, painting and writing.

“The mystical and mysterious do not have a schedule,” she says. “But there’s something about writing in the quiet of the middle of the night that helps empty out my mind and leaves more space.”

5. Spend time in silence

You don’t necessarily have to wake up at 3 a.m. to connect with God in the morning. Reverend Masud Ibn Syedullah, an Episcopalian priest, typically spends quality time with God at 7:30 a.m.

“I set aside time in the morning to be restored by being in silence,” he says. “I’m bombarded with words a lot, so there is a point where I need to just be in the presence of God. To listen to what God is saying. Every morning, God’s spirit is available to us. Make yourself present to that and take it in. Being alone, spending just 5 or 10 minutes in that state, can be so renewing.”

Syedullah also views the hours that we’re asleep as sacred. Not only does God speak to us in dreams, but he can also help us sort through things in our unconscious state. That’s why Syedullah will often go to sleep on Saturday night with a sermon for the following day on his mind.

“I deliberately work on a sermon before I go to bed, trusting that God will further develop that work so I’m even more prepared in the morning,” Syedullah says. “I see sleep as rendering myself to God, not only for his keeping, but for his blessing of restoration.”

5 Thrifted Items That Were Divinely Found

Garage sales, thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales… You can stumble across some hidden treasures at them. But what about a miracle? Could a hidden hand be at work in those bargain bins? Check out our favorite stories of special items that were miraculously found in the most surprising ways.

The Vintage Tin

When Robin’s dad visited her in California for Father’s Day, he only wanted to do one thing: go antiquing. He and Robin’s mom owned an antique store back home in Delaware. Robin perused the flea market tables when something caught her eye. A tiny tin with a strawberry logo and two words at the bottom: Dover, Delaware. A city 30 minutes from her hometown. Her dad bought it for her, to remind her of home. It was one of Robin’s favorite antiquing finds. She didn’t realize how important that tin was until many years later…

Find out how Robin’s flea market find was a sign for the future here.

A Message from Mom

Daryl was driving home when she saw a sign for a garage sale. Maybe it would help her get her mind off those medical test results she was waiting on. She’d developed a pain on her right side that was getting worse every day. She was terrified of meeting the same fate as her mother, who had died suddenly of ALS. “Please help, Mom,” she whispered, as she searched the garage sale tables. “Show me that everything’s going to be okay.” That’s when she noticed a ceramic bunny with big eyes. Something about it looked so familiar…

Read about Daryl’s comforting find at a garage sale here.

Thrift Store Miracle

It was December 23rd and Pauline still didn’t have a single present to put under the tree for her family. Money was tight. Her husband was on disability and her boss had just cut back her hours at work. God, she’d prayed on the drive to the thrift store, give us only what we need. That’s all I ask for Christmas. A chess set for her husband. A picture frame for her parents. And how was she going to afford the brand-name craft set her son and all his friends were going crazy over? The selection at the thrift store was less than desirable. Would God provide?

Check out Pauline’s thrift store Christmas miracle here.

A Mysterious Camera

Thirteen-year-old Addison was spending time with his grandmother, Lois, visiting yard sales around town. One item caught his eye: an old Polaroid camera for only one dollar. When he got home, Addison opened the camera to find a photograph still stuck inside. It showed a young man and woman sitting on a sofa. Addison showed it to his grandmother. Lois held the photo in her hands, shocked. “Where did you get this?” she asked.

Discover Addison and Lois’s amazing connection to the photograph here.

The Angel Pin

Diana was a big jewelry person, so she walked straight up to the jewelry table at the garage sale. She found an assortment of necklaces and jewelry boxes, but nothing caught her eye. She browsed the other tables and then headed back to find her mom. She passed by the jewelry table again and looked down once more. That’s when she saw it. A tiny gold pin at the edge of the table. She picked it up. It was a guardian angel in a circle of diamonds. Where in the world had it come from? Diana was pretty sure it wasn’t there when she’d first stopped at the table. It was like it had just appeared out of nowhere for her to find! Just like years ago, when she was a young child…

Their car was towed to a nearby mechanic. As they hopped out of the tow truck, Kathy spotted a playground at the fast-food restaurant next door. “I’ll take the kids there for a diversion,” she told her husband.

Until a few days later when a four-year-old girl came in for an echocardiogram. She was wearing a knit cap to cover the hair loss from her leukemia treatment and clutched a baby doll in her arms…

5 Stories That Prove Animals Are God’s Messengers

Today’s guest blogger is assistant editor Daniel Kessel.

Whenever I visit my parents’ house in New Jersey, the first one to greet me isn’t usually my mom or dad. It’s our dog, Cosita. The moment I walk through the door, Cosita runs up to me and nuzzles up against my ankles, the warmest greeting I could ask for.

If you’re a pet owner too, you know all about this special bond. Our pets seem to intuit our moods and anticipate our needs before we’ve even had a chance to pet them. To celebrate that intense spiritual connection, I’d like to share five stories about the incredible–often mysterious–ways pets can leave their mark on our lives.

1. Meant To Be Best Friends
Teenager Sam Sartain of Gainesville, Georgia, was adjusting to life with a prosthetic limb after an ATV accident. His family and friends were supportive, but no one could imagine what Sam, a lifelong athlete, was going through.

One day, Sam’s mom stumbled upon the Dachsund Rescue South Florida Facebook page and scrolled through the listings. There, she spotted Pooh, a rescue dog who had recently lost his right hind leg in a car accident. Because of his injury, no one wanted to take him home. But Sam’s mom knew he’d be the perfect companion for her son.

From the moment Sam and Pooh met, the two were inseperable. “He looked at me and he realized I guess that we had the same situation and he immediately ran over towards me,” Sam says.

Adam and his cat, Locket2. The Cat at the Door
Managing Editor Adam Hunter had his own close encounter with the furry kind. Working late one night in his apartment, he heard a high-pitched sound in the hallway. A cat’s meow.

He opened his front door and discovered a black and white cat at his feet, staring up at him with wide eyes.

Who did she belong to? Where had she come from? Adam had no idea. But while he petted her and rubbed her belly, memories of Locket, his childhood cat, resurfaced.

Adam found out the next morning that it wasn’t just a coincidence that his feline visitor came to visit that particular evening…

3. Now That’s A Homing Pigeon
Eleven-year-old Tara Atkins of Montana City, Montana, was devastated when her pet pigeon, Foresta, went missing. Foresta had lived with the Atkins family ever since she was a baby bird, never venturing beyond their backyard. Tara feared that her pet was gone for good.

The next day at school, a teacher called Tara outside. “Don’t you own a pigeon?” he asked. They needed her expert help–a bird on the school’s premises was “dive-bombing” people trying to get inside. Looking up, Tara instantly recognized the blue band tied around the bird’s leg. Foresta!

Pigeons are well-known for their keen, otherworldly sense of direction. But how had Foresta, who’d never left home before, tracked her young owner down 15 miles away at school?

Pete, the once-wild colt4. Wild Horse Heals a Broken Heart
For Jennifer Kirschenman of Eureka, South Dakota, there was something about that horse, a white paint colt. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

Jennifer’s husband had taken her to purchase a horse of her own, something she’d always wanted.

She was in mourning for her Grandpa Pete, who’d passed away three months earlier. He hoped the horse would cheer her up.

As she stared at the different horses, the same one called out to her over and over–the white paint colt. Later, the horse trainer told her something about the horse that gave her chills

5. A Whale of a Tale
While visiting her sister in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Eva Saulitis fell ill and was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. A passionate biologist, Eva had dedicated her life to studying whales in Alaska with her husband, Craig. If only she could be with Craig and their beloved whales now.

As she lay in bed, recuperating from chemo treatments in her sister’s house, she pictured herself on a kayak in Alaska. A dark, shiny shape glided in the water beside her. A whale’s fin. Just then, a surge of vitality seemed to travel through her body. It was more than a daydream–the vision became an important key to her recovery.

3. Note from Beyond
Christmas was the busiest time of year Carolyn and Bob Martin’s Christmas tree farm. Every year at the state fair they held a drawing for a free tree. Carolyn saved all the entry slips.
