Before my husband, Omar, and I got married, we had the \u201ckid\u201d conversation. This wasn\u2019t our first marriage, and we each had children from previous relationships. Our blended family<\/a> got along wonderfully. Why add a new baby to the mix?<\/p>\n

Besides, I was 39 and Omar was 42. In a few years, our kids would be out of the house. Neither one of us wanted to start over, to go back to sleepless nights and changing diapers, right?<\/p>\n

Then my period was late. I\u2019d left Omar and the kids back in Texas to spend a week with family in Massachusetts. A few days into the trip, I got really nervous. What if I was pregnant?<\/a> What would Omar think?<\/p>\n

Anxious<\/a>, I called him. He was calm and supportive. \u201cWhen you get home, we can get a pregnancy test,\u201d he said. I felt better, knowing we were in this together. But after we hung up, I couldn\u2019t stop thinking about having another little person to share our love with.<\/p>\n

I got my period the next day. Dejected, I texted Omar: \u201cNever mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of texting back, he called me. \u201cBaby, are you okay?\u201d His voice was gentle.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d I said. \u201cI know it\u2019s crazy, and we already said we don\u2019t want kids, but I was kind of getting my kids, hopes up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not crazy,\u201d he assured me. \u201cI was too. I think we had that \u2018kids\u2019 conversation too early. Maybe we should revisit it.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart leapt. \u201cI mean\u2026only if you want to.\u201d We talked for an hour about the pros and cons of having another child, who would graduate high school when we were in our fifties. We had plans to travel and enjoy our retirement<\/a>. That wouldn\u2019t be as easy to do. But the thought of bringing more love into our home\u2014into the world\u2014kept pulling us back to \u201cyes.\u201d We put the discussion on hold until we could talk face to face.<\/p>\n

That night I said an extra prayer at bedtime. \u201cGod, the thought of having another baby is scary but also exciting,\u201d I whispered. \u201cWhatever your will is, Lord, please give me a sign<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

I woke the next morning to a text from Omar. \u201cI like the name Roselyn for a girl,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n

I smiled. \u201cOkay, but I\u2019m gonna call her Rosie for short.\u201dThe plane home was full. A stewardess announced that some carry-ons would have to be checked. I had a middle seat. The passenger to my right was already asleep against the window. To my left was an empty aisle seat, but I knew it wouldn\u2019t stay that way.<\/p>\n

Sure enough, just as the doors were closing, one last passenger came striding down the aisle. She plopped a diaper bag under the seat in front of her and buckled her seatbelt in one swift movement, all while juggling a toddler on her hip. The child tugged at her mother\u2019s shirt with her tiny hands and giggled at me as I gave her a wave.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s precious,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks,\u201d the mother said. \u201cShe\u2019s a handful, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I can imagine. What\u2019s your name, little one?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Her mom answered for her. \u201cRosie.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mother smiled, not realizing she was delivering to me the very sign I\u2019d asked for. Our family wasn\u2019t quite complete, and I couldn\u2019t wait to tell Omar!<\/p>\n
