After retiring from a long career teaching<\/a> English at Huntington East High School, my brother, Bob, planned to travel the world. Instead, I was visiting him in the hospital where he had undergone a triple coronary bypass and an aortic valve replacement. He had a long road to recovery ahead.<\/p>\n

Bob didn\u2019t have much experience with being a patient. Certainly not as much as I did. He had always been healthy and kept in good shape, working part-time as a chaplain since retirement<\/a>. I had grown up with chronic illness, had dozens of surgeries. Even now I was facing a puzzling condition my doctors hadn\u2019t yet identified. A condition that gave me symptoms similar to the ones Bob\u2019s heart ailment gave him. I didn\u2019t want to burden him with my own fears right now\u2014he was grappling with uncertainties about what his ordeal would entail. I stroked his arm that held yet another IV catheter, wondering if I would soon face the same questions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI sure wasn\u2019t expecting anything like this,\u201d Bob said. \u201cA failing heart. I can\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it\u2019s a shock. But we\u2019re all here for you. You\u2019re so blessed and loved. Your wonderful wife. Kids. Grandkids. More friends than you can count. I never go anywhere that someone isn\u2019t saying something wonderful about your teaching days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks, Sis. You always say the sweetest things.\u201d But I heard an \u201cIf you say so\u201d in his voice.<\/p>\n

I tried to reassure Bob about how valuable his life was, but I was trying to convince myself about my own life as well. I\u2019d spent so much of my time trying to help others, both before my retirement as a nurse<\/a> and now as a storyteller. But the world was full of those. Would anything I\u2019d done really last after I was gone, like the famous poetry Bob taught in class?<\/p>\n

A housekeeper entered the room with her mop and nodded to Bob in his bed. \u201cHey, Coach!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHuh?\u201d Bob squinted. He was a little groggy from his medication. I could tell he didn\u2019t know who she was.<\/p>\n

The housekeeper smiled. \u201cI knew it was you. My daughter played on your soccer team. I still remember her reciting all those lines of poetry. She loves poems to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d forgotten you coached soccer,\u201d I said when the housekeeper left. \u201cI think of you strictly as an English teacher.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried to combine the two pursuits,\u201d Bob said. \u201cI believed in the value of sports but knew few of my students would pursue sports as a career. I wanted to give them something more.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled to himself. \u201cThose kids could come up with some great lines alright,\u201d Bob said. \u201cSometimes a lot better than what I taught them.\u201d He closed his eyes, then whispered, \u201c\u2018Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both\u2026.\u2019\u201d He drifted off to sleep, quoting further from the immortal Robert Frost<\/a>, one of his favorites. When Bob woke in pain, I hit the call button.<\/p>\n

A nurse arrived with medication and a red velour pillow. \u201cHold this against your chest when you cough. It will keep your stitches secure, Coach.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned my head. She was too young to have known Bob from school. Had he maybe coached a sibling or one of her parents?<\/p>\n

\u201cWord is, I need to quote something when I see you,\u201d she continued. \u201cLet\u2019s see\u2026 \u2018Hope is the thing with feathers.\u2019 Don\u2019t know what it means, but I always liked it.\u201d Clearly Bob\u2019s reputation was traveling through the hospital halls.<\/p>\n

I visited Bob every day, sometimes more than once. I was so weak and short of breath, I rested in any available chair en route to his room. But I was drawn there, like a magnet to steel, as much to gain strength as to give strength to my brother.<\/p>\n

Each time someone quoted poetry to \u201cCoach,\u201d I got a lift. It wasn\u2019t any of those famous poets the staff was honoring with their words, it was Bob himself. He\u2019d had no idea what an impression he\u2019d made on so many.<\/p>\n

One morning a technician came into his room to replace the incentive spirometer he\u2019d been using since before his surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re doing great,\u201d the tech said. \u201cThis will keep you from getting pneumonia, Coach. \u2018To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlfred, Lord Tennyson,\u201d Bob replied without missing a beat.<\/p>\n

Just then, another technician entered the room. He was there to do a bedside chest X-ray, but not without getting in on the game. \u201c\u2018Once more to the sticking place!\u2019\u201d he said as he positioned Bob.<\/p>\n

\u201cWilliam Shakespeare!\u201d I jumped in before my brother had a chance.<\/p>\n

The poem play didn\u2019t let up. His physical therapist quoted Wordsworth; an orderly chose William Blake<\/a>. One afternoon a nurse arrived to flush Bob\u2019s tubing. I saw his eyes widen at the giant needle in her hand. I\u2019d distracted many patients in similar situations.<\/p>\n

\u201cHeard we gotta say something brilliant here, Coach,\u201d the nurse said. \u201cHere\u2019s one: \u2018Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It\u2019s not.\u2019 I\u2019ll give you a hint: It\u2019s not Shakespeare.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Doctor Seuss!\u201d Bob said, his face relaxing. \u201c\u2018There\u2019s no one alive who is youer than you<\/i>!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

That line gave me pause. I knew I\u2019d been the best \u201cme\u201d I could be in all my years of nursing. God had made sure of that. Could it be that I\u2019d made the same kind of loving impressions my brother had? I thought of all my former patients who still kept in touch and hoped maybe that was proof I had.<\/p>\n

By the time Bob left the hospital for 12 weeks of outpatient cardiac rehab, there was no doubt in anyone\u2019s mind that he\u2019d made the world a better place. His on- and off-the-field poetry lessons had taken on a life of their own, and Bob was feeling positive about his recovery.<\/p>\n

My own medical condition was finally identified: a medication error had caused a GI bleed that in turn led to extreme anemia. I fully recovered, thankfully with no heart damage. My attitude fully recovered as well. I didn\u2019t need to be a famous poet to make a mark on the world. Everyday people make a big difference too.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
