No matter how gently our veterinarian broke the news to me, nothing could prepare me for the shock I felt at having to put our beloved golden retriever, Jack, to sleep. When I walked out of his office, empty blue leash dangling from my hand, I couldn\u2019t believe he was gone<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Beside me, my eight-year-old, Daniel, wiped the tears from his own face. He\u2019d bravely insisted on being with his buddy at the end. I was grateful his baby brother, Colin, was too young to understand what was going on.<\/p>\n

My husband, Ted, Daniel and I walked back to the car, where a family friend waited with four-year-old Anna. \u201cLet\u2019s go home,\u201d Ted said quietly. He started up the car.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we forgot Jack,\u201d Anna said. \u201cIsn\u2019t he coming home with us?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ted and I looked sadly at each other. We thought we\u2019d explained all this to Anna. It looked like she hadn\u2019t understood after all. \u201cJack isn\u2019t coming home with us, honey,\u201d Ted said. \u201cRemember? The vet said he was very sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vet couldn\u2019t make Jack better, Anna,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you understand, sweetie?\u201d I said. \u201cJack died.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna nodded slowly. Ted backed out the car. Then, from the car seat, came Anna\u2019s voice again. \u201cBut where is he?\u201d she said, starting to cry. \u201cWhen is he coming home?\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel tried to comfort his sister. I looked helplessly at Ted. Her older brother could comprehend what was happening. Her baby brother wasn\u2019t aware of anything at all. Poor Anna was stuck in the middle.<\/p>\n

That night, when I tucked her into bed, I tried to cheer her up with happy stories of Jack. \u201cWhen we brought you home from the hospital right after you were born, Jack came running to the door wagging his tail. He couldn\u2019t wait to meet you!\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna looked longingly at the door to her bedroom. Usually when I tucked Anna into bed Jack would come padding in right behind me. Anna never went to sleep without getting a big, sloppy good-night kiss from Jack<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s never coming home?\u201d she said. \u201cEver?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJack was very old,\u201d I said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t feel well. Now he\u2019s not sick anymore. He\u2019s in heaven with God and the angels. And he\u2019s very happy there. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Was any of this making sense to her? We\u2019d talked about heaven, but this was Anna\u2019s first experience with death. She hadn\u2019t known anyone else who\u2019d died and gone to heaven.<\/p>\n

She knew she had family who lived far away. We didn\u2019t see them in person, but they loved Anna and knew she loved them in return. That gave me an idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t we write a letter<\/a> to Jack tomorrow?\u201d I said. \u201cYou can tell him how much you love him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna smiled. She loved writing letters. I knew she couldn\u2019t expect a return letter like she got when she wrote to her aunts and uncles, but maybe just talking to Jack would be a comfort.<\/p>\n

Early next morning Anna got out her crayons and we sat down together at the dining room table. Anna selected just the right shade of yellow and drew a circle for a head, followed by a circle body and four circle legs. Then she added Jack\u2019s long, feathery tail.<\/p>\n

\u201cJack loved to play house,\u201d she said as she drew. \u201cAnd dress up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe could never keep those sunglasses on, could he?\u201d I said, remembering good old Jack sitting patiently in his dress while Anna arranged jewelry around his neck.<\/p>\n

Anna selected another crayon to make a stick figure with long hair next to Jack. Then she added a bright yellow sun. When the portrait was finished she dictated a letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cJack is sick. So now he is in heaven,\u201d she said. \u201cI love you and miss you.\u201d She signed her name herself in lopsided letters. \u201cNow we need to send this to Jack.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed the letter in an envelope and wrote the address in block letters: TO JACK IN HEAVEN. Anna licked the envelope and together we put it in the mailbox.<\/p>\n

Our mail carrier looked a little confused when she picked the letter up a couple hours later. But I went outside to quickly explain the situation. \u201cNo problem,\u201d she said, and slipped the letter in her bag.<\/p>\n

Once the letter was gone, I could only hope I\u2019d done the right thing. Anna\u2019s questions seemed to have stopped, but I wondered if she could really understand that Jack was in a truly happy place. And because of that, we could be happy for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019ll understand it in her own time,\u201d said Ted one day after yet another discussion.<\/p>\n

Just before lunch, there was a knock on the door. It was someone from the post office. He held up a box wrapped in brown paper. \u201cAre you Miss Anna Baker?\u201d he asked, looking down.<\/p>\n

Anna nodded shyly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a special delivery<\/a> for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The box was addressed to Anna. The return address read: JACK IN HEAVEN. Anna ran with her box to the kitchen. \u201cI manage the post office and saw your letter,\u201d the man explained. \u201cWe lost our family dog recently. I have a daughter too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in the kitchen with Anna, I helped her unwrap the package. She pulled out a book about a puppy and a stuffed dog that looked a lot like Jack. She squeezed the dog to her chest. \u201cThere\u2019s a letter too!\u201d she said. \u201cRead it, Mommy!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDear Anna,\u201d I read. \u201cI have arrived safely in heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna\u2019s eyes got wide. \u201cDoes he like it there?\u201d<\/p>\n

I continued. \u201cIt is really nice here. The other dogs and I play ball and swim all day. There are many squirrels to chase here and all the mail carriers have bones in their bags for us.\u201d Anna giggled.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy bed here isn\u2019t as comfy as yours, but I want you to know that God takes good care of me here.\u201d I looked down at Anna, who nodded slowly. She understands that, <\/em>I thought. Jack went on to say how happy he was to receive Anna\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI miss my family. I miss you<\/a>,\u201d he finished up. \u201cGod sends his blessings and wants you to know that he loves you. We will both be watching over you. Love, Jack.\u201d I folded up the letter and handed it to Anna. She danced around the kitchen.<\/p>\n

That night I tucked Anna into bed with her new stuffed dog beside her. \u201cJack is in heaven,\u201d she said. \u201cJack is happy there. And that makes me happy too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna would be fine, I knew. Thanks to a letter that truly did come from heaven. By way of a post office angel with a loving heart.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
