After boot camp, my first duty station\u00a0was Naval Facility Coos Head, Oregon. I\u2019d struggled during boot camp with <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/living-longer-living-better\/this-senior-synchronized-swim-team-finds-healing-in-the-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">activities that\u00a0required swimming<\/a>. Yet here I was, with my shipmates, ready to stake my life on a lifejacket and small inflatable kayak on the Rogue River.<\/p>\n<p>As I listened to the guides\u2019 instructions, the menacing premonition nagged me. All of the Rogue River rapids except two fell into Class I, II, and III difficulties. The more\u00a0challenging sections\u00a0were\u00a0Rainie\u00a0Falls, Class V,\u00a0and Blossom Bar, Class IV<strong>.<\/strong> As soon as I started paddling toward Blossom Bar, I knew my apprehension wasn\u2019t misplaced. My kayak slammed into the rocks, and I was thrown into the cold rapids. Wedged between rocks in the frigid water, I flailed my arms before I was sucked down deep into a gray-green abyss.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/miracles\/gods-grace\/are-we-born-believers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I believed in God<\/a> but didn\u2019t feel He was particularly concerned with me. Now,\u00a0desperately trying to find the water\u2019s surface, I pleaded with Him.<\/p>\n<p>The darkness around me gave way to dazzling light. The cold and pain ceased. As I\u00a0zoomed, horizontally, through a narrow tunnel, unconditional love enveloped me. I exited the\u00a0tunnel into a room formed from pure white clouds. Before me hovered three beings, each a\u00a0shimmering, translucent crystal, six to seven feet tall.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>As if sensing my distress, the beings transformed into <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/angels\/8-fascinating-biblical-facts-about-angels-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">familiar biblical angels<\/a>. Light and\u00a0love radiated from their iridescent eyes. For the first time in my life, I felt I belonged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have arrived too soon,\u201d they told me. \u201cYou must go back and finish your work. But since you are here, we will show you some things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The angels produced a book, from which snapshots of my life flashed rapidly by. Then <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/positive-thinking\/optimism-101-imagine-a-positive-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I\u00a0saw my future<\/a>: a man whose face I could not see and two children.<\/p>\n<p>The angel on the left spoke. \u201cI am Yasha\u2019el. I have been with you since the beginning,\u00a0and I will be with you for eternity. You must go back\u2014you have to be there for them.\u201d But I\u00a0didn\u2019t want to!<\/p>\n<p>He took my hand and the two of us floated upward horizontally. Above, a huge ball of\u00a0warm light shone on everything, making me feel loved and known by God. I yearned to be close\u00a0to Him. Yasha\u2019el led me to a huge waterfall, where I sensed the presence of loved ones who had\u00a0passed on. I saw an enormous tree whose leaves morphed into vibrant, iridescent birds. I saw a\u00a0lake so transparent that I could see people I loved on Earth. I was amazed that I could see\u00a0them, but I sensed the lake was <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/miracles\/gods-grace\/between-heaven-and-earth-how-to-find-a-thin-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a boundary between the heavenly and earthly realms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot cross the barrier,\u201d Yasha\u2019el said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease,\u201d I begged. \u201cLet me stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it is time, I will come for you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He put his hands on my shoulders and pushed me backward. I fell at the speed of light, and my\u00a0spirit wrestled back into my body. His push freed me from the rocky crevice that held me, to the\u00a0surface, where I was pulled from the water. The memory of what had just happened to me\u00a0vanished.<\/p>\n<p>A few days after the accident, I developed bronchitis, and the doctor put me on bed rest.\u00a0That night, the dreams began. A tunnel. Three triangular prisms that became angels. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/angels\/an-angels-words-of-comfort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An angel\u00a0who whispered<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019ve been with you since the beginning . . .\u201d Over time, more images appeared.\u00a0A book flashing images from my life. A faceless picture of the man I would marry. Two\u00a0children. An angel saying, \u201cYou have to go back for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After two years at Coos Head, I transferred to a U.S. Naval Facility in Wales, where I\u00a0met a man named Phil. One evening, he asked me, \u201cWhat\u2019s the weirdest thing that has ever\u00a0happened to you?\u201d And I told him\u2014about the kayaking incident, about the dreams.<\/p>\n<p>Though I couldn\u2019t see the face of the man in the book in my dreams, I felt he was there\u00a0with me. Phil and I married in October 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Nine years after my rafting mishap, I was surfing the Web and\u00a0typed in <em>near\u00a0drowning visions<\/em>. The results described what happened to me and gave it a\u00a0name: <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/life-after-death\/a-conversation-with-a-near-death-experience-expert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">near-death experience<\/a>. I\u2019d died that day. I had an NDE to prove it. Everything I saw in my dream was real! <em>Dear God, You did this for me?<\/em> I began to seek God, longing to experience\u00a0again the closeness to Him that enveloped me in my NDE.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-six years have passed. Phil and I have two children, just as the angels showed me.\u00a0I no longer fear death. I have worked for many years in hospice care.
