I\u2019ve been fascinated by the topic ever since, especially since many last words are so cryptic. So I was thrilled to recently talk to Lisa Smartt, a linguist and founder of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.finalwordsproject.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Final Words Project<\/a>. She\u2019s analyzed almost 2,000 \u201cend-of-life utterances\u201d to make sense of the words of the dying. Her book, <em>Words at the Threshold<\/em>, based on data collected with Dr. Raymond Moody, is coming out March 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what Lisa had to say about final words and her own personal connection to the field of research. Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 of our interview, coming soon!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get into studying the last words of the dying?<\/strong><br \/>\nI have always had a love for language. I studied linguistics at UC Berkeley, and my career as a literacy and learning specialist involved analyzing how people acquire and process language. Plus, my dad was a psychologist and poet. We shared a love for words and ideas.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"258\" height=\"286\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-45292\" alt=\"Lisa Smartt\" src=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/lisa_bio_photo_copy.jpg\" style=\"width: 258px;height: 286px;margin-left: 15px;margin-right: 15px;float: right\" \/>In 2012, my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He started radiation and, due to complications from the treatment, only lived for three weeks after that. I found solace during that time in writing down everything he said. I was able to track his consciousness in those final days.<\/p>\n<p>There were so many things that baffled and touched me. After he died, I was left with so many questions. That\u2019s what led me to research last words and start the Final Words Project with Dr. Moody.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/blogs\/glimpses-heaven\/dreams-bring-peace-after-loved-one\u2019s-death-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Read More: Dreams Bring Peace After a Loved One&#8217;s Death<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What about your dad\u2019s last words was so fascinating?<\/strong> <br \/>\nI was especially drawn to his use of metaphors and symbols. He talked about needing help to \u201ccome down,\u201d as if he were floating. He said things like, \u201cI am in the green dimension\u201d or \u201cI need maintenance\u2026there is nothing for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A day before he died, he was on the phone with his secretary, Alice, and he said, \u201cThis is very interesting, Alice, I\u2019ve never done this before.\u201d What was the \u201cthis\u201d he spoke about? Why didn\u2019t he just say \u201cdying\u201d? Was he undergoing something else for which he had no words?<\/p>\n<p>He also spoke of all the people crowding the room, even though there was no one there. There was a kind of sacred quality around my father, much like the energy in a room of a woman who\u2019s just given birth. It\u2019s not that his dying was beautiful and easy. But I became convinced that something was happening that was sacred and holy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did anything strike you as particularly out of character for your dad?<\/strong><br \/>\nOne day, as I sat beside him, his eyes popped open and his eyes tracked the edges of the ceiling. \u201cLisa, Lisa!\u201d he said. \u201cYou were right about the angels!\u201d He had never talked about or believed in angels before.<\/p>\n<p>Ten days later, he announced, \u201cEnough\u2026the angels say enough\u2026only three days left.\u201d These were all words from a man who was once so lucid and very bright. It seemed to signal that his mind was in transition. His mind was seeing and feeling things outside the usual narrative of our ordinary life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/life-after-death\/two-angels-led-the-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Read More: Two Angels Led the Way<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did you take your dad\u2019s \u201cnonsense talk\u201d seriously?<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019d been trained to take all language seriously. Not to judge language, but to transcribe and then understand it. As a linguist, if you hear a language or a dialect that is very different than your own, you don\u2019t think, \u201cThat language is all wrong. That dialect is bad.\u201d You think, \u201cHow fascinating, I want to understand the patterns and structure of that language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is organization in all language, no matter how nonsensical it is. On the surface, the language of the dying may seem like \u201cword salad,\u201d but there are actually patterns that appear to be unique to dying and seem to track the pathway of consciousness in a person\u2019s final days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What were your dad\u2019s very last words?<\/strong><br \/>\nThey were uttered privately to my mother\u2013\u201cThank you.
