Chances are you did too\u2013maybe you still do.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only natural to fear the dark; when we can\u2019t see what\u2019s around, we imagine the unseen dangers that could be lurking in the shadows. That mugger in a ski mask. That monster hiding under the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Today I saw an interesting segment on <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/morning-joe\/watch\/how-to-find-faith-in-the-darkness-229210691861\">Morning Joe<\/a><\/em> about theologian <a href=\"http:\/\/harperone.hc.com\/barbarabrowntaylor\">Barbara Brown Taylor<\/a>\u2019s new book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0062024353\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0062024353&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=guidepostsonline\">Learning to Walk in the Dark<\/a><\/em>. Taylor argues that the darkness is not evil, not something to be feared, but in many ways, where we find ourselves closest to reaching understanding and spiritual fulfillment. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/201556742\/Learning-to-Walk-in-the-Dark-by-Barbara-Brown-Taylor\">You can read the first chapter here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>This is something we\u2019ve known all along at <em>Mysterious Ways<\/em>. The stories we\u2019ve uncovered give reason to be thankful for the darkness. Here are five to consider&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Dark Brings Us Closer<\/strong><br \/>\nDriving home from the beach late one evening, Roxine Shields of Silver Spring, Maryland, was anxious. No other cars were around. Trees lining both sides of the road blocked out the moonlight, and not even a streetlamp could be seen. <em>We should have left earlier, <\/em><em>she thought.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Up ahead, however, her car\u2019s headlights illuminated a figure at the side of the road. A figure she and her husband were <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/inspiration\/mysterious-ways\/mysterious-ways-on-the-lonely-road\">destined to help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Would they have noticed the woman in daylight? Would they have been as concerned for her welfare? In the dark, people come together in the most incredible ways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Dark Helps Us Hear<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s been proven that when we shut off one of our senses, we\u2019re more in tune with the others. The darkness allows our ears to pick up sounds they never would otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Take Julia Eie\u2019s story. She was renting a small apartment in Oregon that overlooked an apple orchard. When she heard cries for help, she assumed it was coming from somewhere among the trees. She called the police, and when they failed to find the source, she drove out on her own to investigate. As it turned out, <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/inspiration\/mysterious-ways\/mysterious-ways-a-cry-for-help\">the pleas came from much\u2013<em>much<\/em>\u2013farther away<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Dark Makes Us Think<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen we turn off our TVs, phones and laptops, the distractions of the world fade away, and it\u2019s just us and our brains. That quiet allows us to make great leaps in understanding. Psychotherapist and former monk Thomas Moore loves <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/inspiration\/mysterious-ways\/in-search-of-an-inner-voice\">taking his dog for a walk late at night<\/a>, when the din of the world has died down: \u201cI look up and see Orion brilliant against the dark blue-black of the sky. My mind can\u2019t hold the vast openness and complexity, and yet, here I am, waiting for my dog to do his business in snow that mirrors the Milky Way. In moments like this, my daily ritual transcends the mundane. I\u2019m pulled out of myself into wonder at the stars. I am ready to hear and entertain even the most fanciful possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Dark Brings Out Our Best<\/strong><br \/>\nIn World War II, Nazi soldiers set a deadly trap in the French town of Voellerdingen for an oncoming battalion of American tanks. Yet the trap failed and the Allies were able to win a major battle. Why didn\u2019t the dynamite go off and blast the Americans to smithereens? After many years, the true story was finally revealed, about <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/inspiration\/mysterious-ways\/the-soldier-and-the-wire-cutter\">a farming family\u2019s brave act<\/a>\u2013and the Nazis\u2019 deep slumber\u2013the night before the battle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Dark Is Where We Find Faith<\/strong><br \/>\nJeff Kling of La Porte, Indiana, <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/inspiration\/mysterious-ways\/a-voice-in-the-dark\">heard a strange voice in the darkness of his hospital room<\/a> after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. \u201cYou\u2019re always so busy. I can never get your attention,\u201d the voice said to him. It went on to assure Jeff that he\u2019d been completely healed. Only later, when the baffled doctor confirms the fact, did Jeff realize who the mysterious voice belonged to.<\/p>\n<p>How about you? What moments in the dark have brought you to a better place?
