{"id":15010,"date":"2026-03-10T10:58:39","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T10:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/uncategorized\/a-long-lost-love-found\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T05:58:36","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T05:58:36","slug":"a-long-lost-love-found","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/miracles\/gods-grace\/a-long-lost-love-found\/","title":{"rendered":"A Long-Lost Love, Found"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Just about there<\/em>, I thought as I rounded the last curve.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a hospice nurse and I don\u2019t typically travel far beyond my small hometown of Henning, Minnesota, but today I was driving 50 miles to a nursing home in a neighboring town to check on a patient, filling in for a colleague.<\/p>\n<p>Not that I minded. One joy of the job is meeting new people. Many of them tell me their life stories, which I always find fascinating, sometimes inspiring.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up, I loved hearing my mom tell stories about her childhood in Henning, especially about her oldest brother, Maurice. He\u2019d passed on long before I was born, when Mom was just nine years old, but even now she talked of him as if he\u2019d just died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I ever tell you about the horse your uncle Maurice had?\u201d Mom asked on a recent visit. \u201cHe knew how much I loved horses, but I was too young to have my own. So he taught me to ride his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She proudly recalled how Maurice enlisted in the army in the middle of World War II. But just three months before the war would end, he was killed by a Japanese sniper in the Philippine jungle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was so close to coming home,\u201d Mom said. She pulled out a tattered clipping of a poem Maurice had written. \u201cIt was for Sally, his fianc\u00e9e,\u201d she said. \u201cShe was a young country schoolteacher. When he returned from the war, they planned to marry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom read the poem to me:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">\n<em>We know that the world\u2019s in a roar<br \/>\nBut with God\u2019s help we\u2019ll win the war.<br \/>\nThen I return, I know not when<br \/>\nI want your love as it has been<br \/>\nAnd that thy love shall not tarry<br \/>\nFrom the girl I want to marry.<br \/>\nAnd this, among other things,<br \/>\nTo hear the bells of our wedding ring.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to Sally?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew. We heard she\u2019d moved out West. But we lost touch. I always wished I could\u2019ve talked with her. I loved her so much. But it\u2019s too late now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uncle Maurice and his long-lost love captured my imagination. Their story seemed like something from a tragic romance novel. I too wished I could talk to Sally, so I could know how the story turned out for the woman who would have been my aunt.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Mom was right. Too many years had passed.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled into the nursing home parking lot. I checked in at the front desk then walked into the patient\u2019s room. The woman was very ill, unable to speak. No life stories today. I took her vital signs and updated her medical chart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here for you,\u201d I whispered to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hasn\u2019t been very awake today,\u201d came a voice from the other side of the curtain that divided the room. The patient\u2019s roommate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeems that way,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you from?\u201d the roommate asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenning,\u201d I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI taught there,\u201d the roommate said, \u201ca long time ago. What\u2019s your name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her, but she didn\u2019t recognize it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about your maiden name, dear?\u201d She didn\u2019t know it, either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d I said. \u201cYou say it\u2019s been a long time. Maybe you\u2019ll recognize my mother\u2019s maiden name.\u201d I told it to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were her parents\u2019 first names?\u201d the woman asked, her voice growing stronger. I told her and she gave a little gasp. She pulled back the curtain. She was sitting in a rocking chair, her eyes wide.<\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden, it clicked. Schoolteacher. <em>Taught decades ago in our town&#8230; could it really be&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Sally,\u201d she said. \u201cI&#8230;I was engaged to your uncle Maurice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She poured out her story. Maurice\u2019s death had been hard on her. She left her teaching job and moved to Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved your uncle so much. I had looked forward to being part of your family. I didn\u2019t ever feel that chapter of my life closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sally married and had a son and three daughters. \u201cWe had a wonderful life,\u201d Sally said. She had returned to Minnesota several years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould it be okay if my mom came to visit?\u201d I asked. \u201cShe has always wondered about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would be fine,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A short time later Mom went to see Sally. \u201cShe was as lovely as I remembered,\u201d Mom told me. \u201cWe had a wonderful visit.\u201d Sally even had her daughter send a picture of Maurice to Mom.<\/p>\n<p>There was one thing, though. Sally had never read Maurice\u2019s poem. So Mom read it to her. Sally loved it. Her eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>The poem was the perfect ending to that chapter of her life, and she\u2019d waited a lifetime to hear it. \u201cI\u2019m so happy you found her,\u201d Mom said.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d gone to that nursing home 50 miles away to fill in for a colleague. I was there to check on a patient, and ended up meeting her roommate. Did I find Sally? Or was I led to her?
