\u201dYou\u2019re not getting any younger, you know,\u201d Grammy said. \u201cYou\u2019re 30 years old! For goodness\u2019 sake, why aren\u2019t you married yet<\/a>?\u201d<\/p>\n

I winced. I\u2019d come to this restaurant to have lunch with my grandmother, not to be interrogated about my love life\u2014or lack thereof. I was painfully aware of my age. And my relationship status. Most of my friends were already married, some with children. I could feel my own biological clock ticking.<\/p>\n

But the typical dating scene wasn\u2019t me<\/i>. I hated going to bars and trying to meet people. Really, I hated dating. The way things were going, I was headed for a life alone with only a cat for company<\/a>. The only thing scarier than that image was the idea of being trapped in a marriage with the wrong person.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t understand, Grammy,\u201d I said with a sigh. \u201cI\u2019m looking for more than just a decent man. I\u2019m looking for Mr. Right. And it seems utterly impossible!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cImpossible situations can become possible miracles,\u201d Grammy said sagely.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not helping,\u201d I muttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am<\/i> helping! You\u2019re just not listening! You shouldn\u2019t be looking for a man, you should be looking for a miracle<\/a>. Miracles happen, and they come in small moments. Keep your eyes open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grammy\u2019s words\u2014confusing as they were\u2014stayed with me. So a few days later, when I was driving home from work and an inexplicable but overwhelming urge to take a different route overcame me, I was extra receptive to it. I went with it, turning right instead of left at the next intersection. I wove my way along unfamiliar backroads, enjoying the change of scenery. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw it\u2014a sign-corner board in front of a recreation center. It read: \u201cTired of the singles bar scene? Try singles square dancing. Inquire within.\u201d<\/p>\n

Was this one of those \u201cmiracle moments\u201d that Grammy had been talking about? I quickly turned into the lot, parked and headed in to check it out.<\/p>\n

The elderly gentleman inside was very helpful. He assured me that their square-dancing nights were the perfect place to meet \u201cwholesome\u201d single men. Their next lesson was held the following Tuesday. He pushed the sign-up sheet in front of me. I scribbled my name on it. \u201cHere\u2019s your dance card,\u201d he said, sliding it across the counter. \u201cYou best be gettin\u2019 yourself a square dance outfit. Petticoat Junction is a right affordable place. It\u2019s just around the corner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why not?<\/i> I thought.<\/p>\n

I was almost giddy picking out my outfit, with cowboy boots to match. But Tuesday night I found myself in the recreation center\u2019s gym, nervously clutching my empty dance card in my hand and feeling silly.<\/p>\n

\u201cBow to your corner, bow to your partner,\u201d the caller\u2019s voice crackled over the loudspeakers. \u201cJoin hands. Circle left.\u201d Ladies\u2019 petticoats swished, and men\u2019s boots shuffled across the shiny wooden floor. I awkwardly watched the dancers from the sidelines, much like I had as a teen at school dances.<\/p>\n

What are you doing?<\/i> I scolded myself. This is crazy. You should just go home.<\/i><\/p>\n

I headed to the exit, hoping to escape without being noticed. Just as I placed my hand on the door\u2019s push bar, I glanced back, catching a glimpse of a redheaded man whisking his partner around the dance floor. His eyes met mine. Then he flashed me a wide, magnetic smile\u2014the likes of which I\u2019d never seen before. I felt my heart skip a beat as I hesitantly returned it. Maybe five more minutes wouldn\u2019t hurt. I turned around and headed to the refreshment table.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m guessin\u2019 the fellas are keepin\u2019 your dance card full,\u201d said an older woman who was pouring herself a glass of lemonade.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, not really.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you go frettin\u2019,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMen are just shy little boys at heart. \u201cAny of them younger fellas caught your attention?\u201d<\/p>\n

I could feel myself blush. \u201cYou see that man over there\u2014the redheaded man sporting a cowboy hat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do. He was eyeing you earlier, you know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEyeing me?\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled. \u201cOh, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The speaker crackled again. \u201cThe next dance begins in five minutes,\u201d the caller said into the mic. \u201cGentlemen, find yourself a partner, square your sets.\u201d<\/p>\n

People scrambled to pair up. I watched the redheaded man. Whom would he ask? We locked eyes again.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook! He\u2019s walking toward you!\u201d the older woman exclaimed.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t believe it, but he was. My heart was in my throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d he greeted me. He tipped his hat. \u201cMight I have the next dance?\u201d His eyes were blue, I noticed. My mouth was dry. I quickly gathered my composure. \u201cYes,\u201d I said, my voice quivering. \u201cI\u2019d love to.\u201d<\/p>\n

He took my hand in his, ushering me onto the dance floor. The music began, and I melted into his arms like I\u2019d always belonged there. His name was Bill.<\/p>\n

A few months later, as I stood at the altar exchanging wedding vows with Mr. Right, I realized Grammy had been right. Thank goodness I hadn\u2019t run home before the miracle unfolded, moment by moment, each one leading me to Bill.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
