I had lost my 45-year-old son to the same drug a year and a half earlier. Shock and <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/how-to-find-healing-for-a-broken-heart\/\">heartbreak<\/a> couldn\u2019t begin to describe what I was feeling.<\/p>\n<p>I already had my boarding pass when I got to the airport, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/addiction-and-recovery\/how-a-divine-nudge-saved-two-lives\/\">something nudged me<\/a> to go to the ticket counter to check on my flight before I went through security. The agent told me my connecting flight to Michigan was delayed three hours, my flight to New York by another two hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease,\u201d I told the ticket agent. \u201cI just want to get to my family in New York. Is there anything you can do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have one seat left on a direct flight to LaGuardia Airport in New York City,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it leaves in five minutes. Hurry!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I raced through security. But in my haste, I completely forgot the gate number the ticket agent had told me. Now I stood frozen in place, staring at the departures board, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/emotional-and-mental-health\/how-to-find-calm-when-you-are-overwhelmed-or-anxious\/\">feeling so lost and overwhelmed<\/a> that I burst into tears. What else could possibly go wrong?<\/p>\n<p>Just then, I felt a pair of arms wrap around me in a huge bear hug. <em>What on earth?<\/em> I turned around to find a man who was about my kids\u2019 ages. He was beaming at me. \u201cHi, Mary-Ann!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked familiar, but I couldn\u2019t place him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s me, Eric,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom the prayer group?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Eric.<\/em> I vaguely remembered him from a <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/how-to-pray-for-everyone\/\">prayer group<\/a> I belonged to, though we\u2019d never really talked much. I certainly didn\u2019t have time for chitchat now!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry, I have to go,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m going to miss my flight\u2014I have to get to LaGuardia!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait,\u201d Eric said. \u201cThat\u2019s my flight too. Come with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He led me to the gate, and we boarded just in time. We didn\u2019t get a chance to talk much more, though. He was seated in a different part of the plane.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived at LaGuardia, I had to wait for my ride\u2014I hadn\u2019t had time before the flight to notify my family about the change in plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m on my way to Texas for work,\u201d Eric said. \u201cWant to quickly grab some coffee while I wait for my connecting flight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat on a bench. I told Eric why I was in New York. How my daughter Laurie had died, just as my son had less than two years before. Eric\u2019s face fell. He grew quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never got to tell you this,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I knew your son. We were in a recovery group together. I\u2019ve been sober from drugs for 20 years, but I still go to meetings. That\u2019s where I met your son. He always talked about his daughter, how much he loved her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both my kids had been so loving and kind, good souls beneath their terrible <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/addiction-and-recovery\/addiction-and-recovery-8-lessons-from-a\/\">addictions<\/a>. It felt good to remember that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I pray with you?\u201d Eric asked. I nodded weakly. Together we prayed for Laurie and for me <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/bible-resources\/5-prayers-for-strength\/\">to be strong<\/a> in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>I got up to go. \u201cI\u2019m so glad you were here,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFunny you should say that,\u201d Eric said. \u201cWhen I booked this flight, I was so irritated that I had to go through New York just to get to Texas from South Carolina. Typical airlines, I thought. But obviously there was a reason&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The airlines might have been delayed that day, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/miracles\/gods-grace\/thankful-for-god-s-perfect-timing\/\">God\u2019s timing was perfect<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was going to miss my flight.
