It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl. As I got ready, I could hear icy rain pelting the windows. I said a quick prayer for Baby-Girl. She was out there somewhere in the storm, I could just feel it. Sure, it had been six months since she\u2019d gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles<\/a>, after all.<\/p>\n

That summer, my sweet kitty had disappeared from my parents\u2019 house in Indiana. Baby-Girl had been staying with them while I was between apartments. I\u2019m a nun and Catholic school teacher. At the time, I lived and worked in Washington, D.C. I was staying with friends until I signed my lease on a new place. Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents\u2019 house three days before I was set to fly back home to pick her up.<\/p>\n

My dad and I spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was the family\u2019s resident \u201crealist,\u201d which meant he spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. \u201cShe\u2019s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her,\u201d he said. I rolled my eyes. Dad always supported me, but he could be so skeptical. He could do with a little more faith<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Besides, though I couldn\u2019t explain it, I knew<\/em> I\u2019d see Baby-Girl again. She\u2019d been a stray when I found her. A scrappy little tabby that had survived all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after I returned to D.C. without her and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we\u2019d be reunited.<\/p>\n

Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search right where I left off. I grabbed Baby-Girl\u2019s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter, hoping she\u2019d been found.<\/p>\n

\u201cSharon, you have to be realistic<\/em>,\u201d my dad said as we headed to the garage. \u201cShe\u2019s been gone too long. You\u2019re not going to find her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I just have a feeling,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Dad raised an eyebrow as he climbed into the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you believe in Christmas miracles?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cBah humbug,\u201d he said, lightening the mood<\/a>. It was his favorite Christmas saying and an inside joke in our family. He even had a shirt with the phrase emblazoned across the front, which he wore every Christmas morning. I threw my hands up in mock despair.<\/p>\n

At the shelter, the woman at the front desk greeted my dad warmly. \u201cGood to see you again, Mr. Dillon! Still looking for your cat?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ah,<\/em> I thought, maybe he\u2019s not such a pessimist after all.<\/em><\/p>\n

A staff member took us to see the cats. \u201cWhen did she go missing?\u201d the woman asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cSix months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd was she chipped?\u201d No, I had to admit, Baby-Girl was not. The staffer noticeably winced at the words. \u201cWhen we get unchipped cats, they\u2019re put up for adoption after three days,\u201d she explained. \u201cEven if your cat was brought in, she\u2019s probably gone by now.\u201d<\/p>\n

We walked through rows of cages. My eyes scanned cats of all shapes and sizes. None of them was my Baby-Girl. Then I noticed a room farther back. I pushed ahead. \u201cSweetheart, that\u2019s where they keep the cats that just came in,\u201d Dad said. \u201cYour cat wouldn\u2019t be in there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t hurt to look!\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

I stepped in the room and heard a familiar meow. My eyes zeroed in on a little tabby cat with big green eyes. She was skinnier than I remembered, but it was Baby-Girl all right! My eyes welled up with tears. I opened the cage door. Baby-Girl practically jumped into my arms. I held her close as Dad looked on, mouth agape.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad! It\u2019s Baby-Girl!\u201d I cried.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s just no way….\u201d he mumbled to himself.<\/p>\n

I returned to the front desk to let them know I\u2019d found my cat. The shelter staff was skeptical. I pointed out that this cat matched Baby-Girl\u2019s description perfectly\u2014right down to her hind left white paw. Still they looked uncertain.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait here! I can prove she\u2019s my cat,\u201d I said, excusing myself to grab the carrier. I\u2019d trained Baby-Girl to walk inside the carrier when I opened its door. Sure enough, when she was let down in the middle of the room, she made a beeline for the carrier and scooted right inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s definitely your cat,\u201d a staffer laughed. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen any cat do that willingly.\u201d<\/p>\n

I asked when she\u2019d been brought in. She\u2019d arrived during the ice storm\u2014likely about the same time I\u2019d prayed.<\/p>\n

Back home, the rest of the family welcomed Baby-Girl. She purred like a motorboat, rubbing up against everyone\u2019s legs. She seemed completely at home. Dad remained stubbornly skeptical.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just cannot be her,\u201d he said. \u201cNot after all this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

I rolled my eyes. Eventually, Baby-Girl made her way down to the basement, where her litter box was kept.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee? How would she know that the box was there if she hadn\u2019t been here before?\u201d I said to Dad.<\/p>\n

\u201cFine,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m 40 percent convinced it\u2019s her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat would it take to change your mind?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He considered for a moment. \u201cIf she sits in her favorite spot in the hearth, I\u2019ll believe it\u2019s her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baby-Girl loved to sit curled up inside<\/em> my parents\u2019 decorative fireplace. And that\u2019s exactly what she did as soon as dinner was done.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, maybe it\u2019s her,\u201d Dad admitted. \u201cI\u2019m about 60 percent sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

We all groaned. Dad took to his armchair to read as we wound down for the evening. All of the sudden, he burst out laughing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s so funny, Bill?\u201d Mom asked him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy book,\u201d he said. \u201cIt says: \u2018Baby-Girl, I have lost you. Now I have found you. I will never lose you again!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

We all roared with laughter<\/a>. \u201cIs that enough, Dad? Or does the Holy Spirit himself have to appear and tell you?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay! Ninety percent!\u201d Dad said. \u201cBut only because the Baby-Girl in the story is a lost dog, not a cat.\u201d<\/p>\n

We were all almost in tears from laughing so hard. My heart was filled with gratitude\u2014I was surrounded by family and, against all odds, my cat was home again, six months after going missing.<\/p>\n

It turned out, Baby-Girl\u2019s return wasn\u2019t the only Christmas miracle<\/a> that year. The next day, when Dad came downstairs for Christmas morning, he was wearing a new holiday shirt. It read: I Believe!<\/em><\/p>\n
