That\u2019s when things can get tricky, especially if the doctor doesn\u2019t believe in the miraculous.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, a medical team at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center has come up with a handy mnemonic tool\u2013called AMEN (<em>A<\/em>ffirm, <em>M<\/em>eet, <em>E<\/em>ducate, <em>N<\/em>o matter what)\u2013to help doctors better handle discussions about miracles. After all, hospitals are no strangers to the miraculous. God\u2019s wonder certainly seems to reach us most when we\u2019re at our lowest. And <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/inspiration\/mysterious-ways\/spiritual-healing\">spirituality can play a significant role in a patient\u2019s recovery process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>AMEN is a four-step process. It starts by affirming the beliefs of a patient; then meeting the patient or their family where they are\u2013including, sometimes, in prayer; then educating patients as a medical provider; then, no matter what, assuring patients of a commitment to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI use the AMEN mnemonic pretty much every day,\u201d Dr. Thomas Smith, director of palliative medicine at Johns Hopkins, told <em>Time<\/em>. \u201cMaybe my patients need more miracles than other doctors\u2019 patients, but it is a common occurrence and an underlying theme in many people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That got me thinking: Maybe the AMEN method shouldn\u2019t be limited to doctors. I have a feeling it can work wonders for us non-medical folks too. After all, don\u2019t we all need a reminder to stay open-minded to miracles, especially in our encounters with others?<\/p>\n<p>When a friend asks for advice and mentions miracles, it\u2019s easy to look for a more practical solution and secretly think the worst. But maybe we can take a different approach. <strong>Acknowledge<\/strong> the need for a miracle, <strong>meet<\/strong> together in prayer, <strong>explore<\/strong> all options for a solution and stay supportive&#8230; <strong>no matter what<\/strong>. A prescription for hope.<\/p>\n<p>So the next time someone tells me they\u2019re wishing, praying, searching for a miracle?
