\u201cI\u2019ve got a really good story for you,\u201d my editor told me the other day in the office kitchen.<\/p>\n

I was a newspaper journalist for 25 years before coming to Guideposts. There\u2019s not a whole lot that surprises me. But this, she assured me, wasn\u2019t the usual fare. \u201cThis guy\u2019s done a video,\u201d she said. \u201cWatch it. You\u2019ll see what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

It had been shared to the Mysterious Ways <\/em>Facebook page<\/a> by Karen Byerley Knutsen. A cell phone video of her father, Kenneth Byerley. I pulled it up online. Ken was an older, affable-looking man in a faded yellow T-shirt that read Clowning to Children<\/em>. He sat in a brown arm\u00adchair with a sheaf of papers in front of him. This guy\u2026a video star? Curious, I hit Play.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to talk about the love of God,\u201d Ken said slowly. \u201cAnd when God talks to us, we better listen.\u201d Then he launched into a story about a vision, both fascinating and perplex\u00ading. I saw what my editor had meant. I had to know more about Ken and his startling experience.<\/p>\n

I gave Ken a call. I recognized his voice from the video at once. Engaging, full of Midwestern charm. He laughed easily, and yet there was a certain shyness to him. It was impossible not to like him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow are things in Clinton, Wis\u00adconsin?\u201d I asked. Clinton\u2019s a small town an hour south of Madison. Population: 2,100. A place of neatly trimmed lawns, where $4.65 will get you a meat loaf<\/a> sandwich at the Sun Down Caf\u00e9. Ken\u2019s lived in Clinton most his life. \u201cSince my family moved here in \u201945,\u201d he told me. And he\u2019s become a local celebrity of late.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople will stop me on the street, saying, \u2018I saw your video,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cOr they\u2019ll ask \u2018When\u2019s your next vid\u00adeo coming out?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\nIn the background, I could hear his daughter Karen chuckling over the speakerphone. She\u2019s one of Ken\u2019s eight kids. She looks after him and films his videos recounting the various miracles<\/a> in his life. The story I\u2019m interested in happened back in 1987. Ken\u2019s been talking about it ever since. But only recently has it gained a wider audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me what happened,\u201d I said. \u201cThe day you had\u2026the vision<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, let\u2019s see,\u201d Ken said, matter-of-factly. \u201cIt was Friday, a payday, and I was on my way to the bank\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, Ken was a welder at the Chrysler plant, just across the Illinois line. He\u2019d worked there almost 10 years. Past two o\u2019clock in the afternoon, the lanes at the bank were backed up with cars. Just as Ken reached the teller window, he spotted someone familiar pull up beside him in the adjoining bank lane. It was Bo, his son David\u2019s boss. David, then 21, had been working the past year for the local grain dealer, whose massive corn silos constituted the Clinton skyline.<\/p>\n

Bo gave Ken a friendly wave, and the two of them went on with their business. Ken deposited his pay\u00adcheck. The second before he pulled away from the window, though, something very strange happened. He saw Bo again in the lane next to him. This time, though, his car window was rolled down. His expression, sorrowful. \u201cI\u2019m sorry about David,\u201d Bo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid?\u201d Ken said, startled. \u201cWhat about David?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was up on one of our silos,\u201d Bo said. \u201cHe fell off the top, 40 feet to the ground. He got killed. I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the next instant, Ken snapped back to reality. He looked up to see Bo\u2019s pickup pulling away from the bank. The conversation had never happened. And yet\u2026it felt so real. Ken shook his head, chastising him\u00adself. What in the world am I doing, thinking such a bad thing? <\/em>he won\u00addered. He tried to brush the vision, whatever it was, aside.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait a minute,\u201d I interrupted Ken on the phone. \u201cYou have this odd vision about your son and you just dismiss it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d Ken said, a bit sheepishly. \u201cI try to be a positive person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d I said. \u201cWhat happened after that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ken pulled out of the bank just before three o\u2019clock and headed home. His route took him past Bo\u2019s massive corn silos. As he drove by, something else happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard a voice,\u201d Ken told me.<\/p>\n

\u201cA voice?\u201d I asked him. \u201cWhat kind of voice?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA small voice<\/a>,\u201d Ken said. \u201cIt said, \u2018Pray for David.\u2019 I thought, Why do I need to do that? David\u2019s fine!\u201d<\/p>\n

Ken put the thought out of his mind. First he was seeing things. Now he was hearing them too. Maybe he was just tired after a long day at the Chrysler plant. He still had to cut the lawn when he got home. He couldn\u2019t be worried about things that weren\u2019t real.<\/p>\n

But the voice came back, even more insistent. Pray<\/a> for David! <\/em>This time, it was even clearer\u2014direct and commanding.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought, Okay, I\u2019m supposed to do this,\u201d Ken told me. So he said a short prayer, asking God to watch over his son. But even then, it wasn\u2019t a deeply felt plea. More like a grudg\u00ading response. \u201cI said, \u2018Lord, you know what this is all about,\u2019\u201d Ken remembered. All these years later, I could sense him still shaking his head at the memory.<\/p>\n

Ken arrived home, mowed the lawn and didn\u2019t think too much more about the vision and the voice. Until that evening, when his son walked through the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad,\u201d David said. \u201cI almost didn\u2019t make it home today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy? What happened?\u201d Ken said.<\/p>\n

There\u2019d been a lot of chaff on top of the silos. So David had been asked to go up and hose it off. He climbed to the top of one silo, start\u00aded the hose and\u2014<\/p>\n

WHOOSH! <\/em><\/p>\n

The water pressure sent David flying back. The force blew him straight to the edge of the silo. But he didn\u2019t fall off.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt something\u2014someone\u2014firmly pushing on my back,\u201d David said. \u201cIt kept me in place long enough to collect my wits and shut off the hose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ken couldn\u2019t believe it. \u201cDavid,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat time did that happen?\u201d<\/p>\n

David paused. \u201cGuess it was about three,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ken told David about the vision, about the voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad, you must\u2019ve saved my life,\u201d David said.<\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t how Ken saw it. Not then. Not now. \u201cGod did what he had to do to save you,\u201d Ken told David. \u201cNot me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I got goose bumps at those words. And yet there was a question I couldn\u2019t help but ask him. The journalist in me still needed to make sense of things.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was the point?\u201d I asked Ken. \u201cWhy did you have to pray for David? God surely would have saved him either way, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence. Finally Karen piped up. \u201cI think it was about his faith,\u201d she said. \u201cGod told him to pray and he did.\u201d Unlike me, Ken wasn\u2019t bothered by the question of why. It was enough to know it happened.<\/p>\n

Ken told the story of the silos so often, it became part of family lore. It got so no one thought much about it. Other miracles happened. Like the time Ken accidentally got hit in the head with a hammer. \u201cOne inch over and the doctor said I\u2019d be dead.\u201d Not to mention when God told his son Randy to duck out of the way of a flying piece of metal.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Ken had a stroke. He thought God was calling him home. His family felt helpless to comfort him. Then an idea came to his daughter Peggy. \u201cDad,\u201d she said to Ken, \u201ctell me about the day you had the vision.\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

She recorded the story on her phone and posted it to Facebook. More than 200 people liked it. It was the spark Ken needed. He pulled through. Except, he didn\u2019t have the strength he once did. He couldn\u2019t drive. For years, he\u2019d been active in a clown ministry, dressing up and visiting the hospital once a month. Now he couldn\u2019t even do that. Karen and her family moved in to help care for him. She noticed her dad feeling down. His one favorite activi\u00adty? Watching pastor Charles Stanley on the television.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day I heard him say, \u2018Every\u00adone who knows God\u2019s love<\/a> needs to share their testimony,\u2019\u201d Ken said. \u201cI told Karen, \u2018Why don\u2019t we post more videos to Facebook?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve been posting them regu\u00adlarly ever since\u2014the miracles of Ken\u2019s life\u2014at Ken\u2019s Ministry on Facebook. People in Clinton can\u2019t get enough. The whole thing has given Ken a new lease on life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you take from all this?\u201d I asked Karen. This time she an\u00adswered right away.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know God is real,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t have any doubt at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
