Those that have a possible story for the magazine, I try to look at right away. The others have to wait until I have a free moment.<\/p>\n<p>Some books are particularly tempting, though, and it\u2019s hard to resist paging through them, even if I have pressing deadlines. This week I gave in to temptation\u2014I have my colleagues at Guideposts Books to blame\/thank for this\u2014and took a peek at the Norman Vincent Peale daily devotional <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shopguideposts.org\/positive-living-day-by-day.html\">Positive Living Day by Day<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Each time I finished editing a story or something else on my to-do list, I read a devotional or two. A good way to reward myself, I figured. And an even better way to keep myself positive and productive, it turned out, because Dr. Peale\u2019s devotionals give simple yet effective positive thinking tips. Here\u2019s a sampling (these aren\u2019t in chronological order because I jumped around the book at random):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/norman-vincent-peale\/norman-vincent-peale-explains-how-acting-happy-leads-positive-change\"><strong>Act as if\u2026<\/strong> <\/a>(October 12) \u201cYou can bring about the ideal condition by persistently acting as though that ideal condition already existed,\u201d Dr. Peale writes. Scared about doing something new? Act as though you\u2019re fearless and give it a try. Plagued by negative thoughts? Act as if you\u2019re a positive thinker and slowly you\u2019ll find yourself becoming one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/norman-vincent-peale\/moment-silence-powerful-positive-thinking-technique\"><strong>Take some quiet time. <\/strong><\/a>(August 31) Dr. Peale quotes the Indian poet Tagore\u2014\u201cEvery day wash your soul in silence\u201d\u2014and suggests that we all set aside a few minutes a day to close our eyes, sit still and be silent. Press pause on all the noise in your life\u2014turn off your cell and computer if you have to\u2014and savor the silence. Sounds wonderful, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/norman-vincent-peale\/inspiring-story-about-overcoming-difficulties-power-prayer\"><strong>Be grateful.<\/strong> <\/a>(April 22) Dr. Peale recalls a man named Jim who was going through terrible struggles and yet when he prayed, didn\u2019t ask God for anything but instead thanked him. How come? Dr. Peale asked. \u201cGod knows what I need,\u201d Jim replied. \u201cLet me tell you all the wonderful things I have\u2026\u201d Next time you feel down, count your blessings.
