What\u2019s up?\u201d I said, answering my cell phone with an exasperated sigh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, honey. We haven\u2019t talked in a while, and I just wanted to hear your voice! You sound distracted. Did I catch you in the middle of something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, I\u2019m always in the middle of something,\u201d I snapped.<\/p>\n<p>Something in me opened, and I noticed the meanness of my tone. \u201cMom, I\u2019m sorry,\u201d I blurted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/religious-seasons\/lent\">Lent<\/a> was about to begin, and I had been thinking about <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/bible-resources\/deepen-your-faith\/developing-spiritual-discipline\/\">a spiritual discipline to take on<\/a>. I found it in that phone call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell you what, Mom,\u201d I said. \u201cFor Lent, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/caregiving\/family-caregiving\/advice-for-caregivers\/5-tips-for-better-virtual-connection-with-loved-one\/\">I\u2019m going to call you every day<\/a>. It can just be for five minutes. But I\u2019m going to call you. I called Mom in the evening as I drove home after work. We talked, as such daily contact leads you to do, about what she and Dad had for dinner, how loud my husband snored the night before, the funny snippet of conversation she heard in <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/how-to-make-the-most-of-your-trips-to-the-grocery-store\/\">the grocery store<\/a>. I appreciated her insights and her wit. I relaxed into our talks and shared more deeply.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks into this practice, my husband and I visited my parents. My dad pulled me aside. \u201cThose calls to your mother,\u201d he said, \u201ckeep them up. She really enjoys them. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/stories-of-faith-and-hope\/a-message-of-hope-from-brett-leveridge-phone-a-friend\/\">They make her day!<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.
