I did it!<\/em> Last November, I stood at the top of my forty-sixth Ad\u00adirondack peak<\/a> in less than four months, the breathtaking beau\u00adty of New York State\u2019s Keene Valley spread before me. I raised my arms in triumph and took a deep breath of crisp mountain air. It doesn\u2019t get much better than this.<\/em><\/p>\n

Over the years, I\u2019d summitted every peak taller than 4,000 feet in the Ad\u00adirondacks, joining a group known as the 46ers. What made today special was that I\u2019d set a goal to do all 46 again in less than a year. Then nailed it with\u00adin just a few months. A personal best!<\/p>\n

I\u2019m big on focus and commitment. I\u2019m a full-time literacy<\/a> teacher, a Ph.D. student in education and a church or\u00adganist. In my free time, I tackle hiking challenges. I like to push myself, to accomplish things. It\u2019s how I feed my\u00adself, physically, mentally, spiritually.<\/p>\n

I looked over at my husband, Mike, and friends Emily and Katie-Jean, who\u2019d joined me on this climb to the top of Dial and Nippletop Mountains. They were all fit, experienced hikers, though not as gung-ho about it as me, Mike especially. He\u2019s more of a tech guy.<\/p>\n

We\u2019d set off in the morning, dressed in layers to ward off the chill. It took us just less than five hours to cover the five miles to the 4,620-foot summit<\/a> of Nippletop, with more snow and ice on the rocky trail the closer we got to the top. It was almost 1:30 p.m. now. We\u2019d have to head down soon, while it was still light out.<\/p>\n

A friendly young hiker<\/a> waved to us. \u201cHey, want me to take your picture?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely!\u201d I said. I put my arm around Mike. Emily and Katie-Jean squeezed in next to us.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks for doing this for me,\u201d I whispered to Mike.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so proud of you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I gazed out over the sweeping vista. The purple mountains in the distance. The crystal blue sky that seemed to stretch on forever. This was the best part. I felt such gratitude for being able to experience the beauty of God\u2019s creation<\/a>, a blessing for all the work I\u2019d put into this. Thank you, Lord, for being with me in this challenge.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mike gave the hiker his phone, which had a better camera than mine. The other guy snapped a few pics.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, let\u2019s get going,\u201d I said. \u201cI want to take a different trail so we can get down before dark. It\u2019s steeper but shorter.\u201d It would still be a good four hours before we got to our car, which was in a parking lot three miles from the base of the mountain.<\/p>\n

We spaced ourselves apart so we wouldn\u2019t fall on each other if one of us stumbled. I led the way, setting a fast pace. I wanted to scout out the terrain.<\/p>\n

The descent grew steeper. I\u2019d caught a glimpse of this trail on the way up, but what had appeared to be snow was more like a river of ice.<\/p>\n

I stopped to attach microspikes\u2014steel teeth that clamp onto my boots for extra traction. I\u2019d reminded Mike to pack his microspikes. I hoped he\u2019d remembered. Had I told our friends to bring theirs?<\/p>\n

Carefully I sidestepped down the slope. A quarter mile down, I stopped and looked up the trail for the others. I couldn\u2019t see them.<\/p>\n

Then an anguished scream pierced the quiet. Mike! In the 10 years we\u2019d been married, I\u2019d never heard him cry out like that. He must have fallen.<\/p>\n

I scrambled up the frozen slope. Why hadn\u2019t I hung back to guide him?<\/p>\n

Finally I saw him, maybe 100 feet ahead of me. Sprawled on a steep, narrow, wooded part of the trail<\/a>. Ice everywhere. His hands were clutching his right leg. It felt as if I flew the rest of the way to him. My eyes went to his foot. It hung gro\u00adtesquely, pointing the wrong way. I gasped. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI slipped on the ice,\u201d he said. \u201cThen I heard this crack. It hurts bad!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry,\u201d I said, my heart rac\u00ading. \u201cI\u2019ve got this.\u201d I dug through my daypack\u2014map, blanket, water bottle, headlamp, snacks, space blanket, hy\u00addration pack, first aid kit. All this stuff but nothing for a broken bone. Out in nature, I always felt on top of things. Now there was nothing I could do for my husband. Poor Mike! What had I gotten him into?<\/p>\n

Moments later, Emily and Katie-Jean came cautiously down the slope. Katie-Jean was a physical therapist<\/a>. \u201cWhat should we do?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Katie-Jean checked Mike\u2019s ankle. \u201cWe need to splint it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, try this,\u201d I said, handing over my hiking poles. I peeled off one of my shirts. Katie-Jean fixed a pole to Mike\u2019s leg, using my shirt and several bandanas. What now? There was no way the three of us could carry him down this mountain.<\/p>\n

I pulled out my cell phone and punched 911. Nothing. No signal.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I help?\u201d It was the guy who\u2019d taken our picture at the summit.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy husband fell. He\u2019s hurt, and I don\u2019t have service here.\u201d The words came out in a rush.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake mine,\u201d he said. \u201cI got service near the top.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019d have to leave Mike and climb higher to get service.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got him,\u201d Emily said. I nod\u00added and squeezed Mike\u2019s arm. \u201cHang on, hon,\u201d I said. I wished I\u2019d never organized this hike. Mike was only here\u2014and hurt\u2014because of me.<\/p>\n

I hurried up the slope. He\u2019s depend\u00ading on you,<\/em> I told myself. I kept trying 911, hitting redial even as I picked up speed, breaking into a jog.<\/p>\n

Just above the tree line, the call fi\u00adnally went through. \u201cWe\u2019re hiking Nippletop, and my husband fell,\u201d I told the 911 dispatcher. \u201cI think he broke his leg.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs he conscious?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but his leg is bent sideways at the ankle. He\u2019s in a lot of pain. We won\u2019t be able to get out by ourselves. We need help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA forest ranger will hike up,\u201d the dispatcher said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to get your location from your phone. Can you describe where you are?\u201d<\/p>\n

I did my best to explain, then rushed back to Mike. \u201cHelp\u2019s coming,\u201d I said. He nodded, grimacing.<\/p>\n

I returned the phone to its owner, but he stayed in case he could help. I tucked my space blanket around Mike. We talked and joked around to keep his spirits up. The rest of us kept mov\u00ading to stay warm.<\/p>\n

An hour went by. Then another. The sun was sinking in the sky. What if Mike went into shock? But there was nothing I could do except wait and pray<\/a>. Lord, my husband is so much more important than some personal milestone. I\u2019d trade all those summits just so Mike could be okay.<\/em><\/p>\n

At last, a ranger in a navy jacket appeared, shouldering a bulky green backpack. She took charge immedi\u00adately. \u201cWe\u2019re going to airlift him out,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have to hurry. It can\u2019t happen after dark.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ranger pulled a saw from her backpack. \u201cYou need to cut down trees so your husband doesn\u2019t hit them as he\u2019s being raised,\u201d she said. \u201cBe care\u00adful\u2014the saw is sharp.\u201d<\/p>\n

Was she serious? The trees around us were 20-foot-tall birches, not spin\u00addly little saplings. Still, we worked frantically and managed to fell six trees in a half hour.<\/p>\n

By now, the chopper was overhead, its propellers whipping up a fierce wind. The ranger radioed the pilot, and he dropped a rope. The ranger fashioned a half harness and slipped it around Mike. He rose slowly in the air.<\/p>\n

Soon Mike would be at the hospi\u00adtal, getting the care he needed. An extraordinary rescue, made possible only through the efforts of an entire team. Our friends Emily and Katie-Jean, the hiker who\u2019d lent me his phone, the ranger, the helicopter crew, the dispatcher and other rangers who had been in constant communication with everyone. And God, who\u2019d coor\u00addinated it all.<\/p>\n

Relief and gratitude<\/a> washed over me as the crew lifted Mike into the helicopter. I waved and watched until the helicopter was barely a speck in the sky.<\/p>\n

It would be a long hike back down for the rest of us. I strapped on Mike\u2019s backpack in addition to my own. I felt myself sag under the weight.<\/p>\n

Katie-Jean put her hand on my shoulder. \u201cHow are you doing?\u201d she asked. \u201cI\u2019d be freaking out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m okay,\u201d I said. Exhausted and a little shaky but okay. And that was because of everyone around me. Reaching the mountaintop, even my forty-sixth of the highest peaks in the Adirondacks, wasn\u2019t how I felt closest to God. It was knowing that he\u2019d sup\u00adported me<\/a> when I really needed him, bringing the people who were able to help, every step of the way.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t wait to reunite with Mike at the hospital. I started down the mountain with my friends, the packs I carried already feeling lighter.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
