Cara Whitney had a busy life in Las Vegas. The successful radio personality and author, the wife of comedian Dan Whitney, better known as \u2018Larry the Cable Guy,\u2019 was also a mom of two<\/a>. But when she decided a change of scenery was in order, she moved the family to a horse farm in Nebraska. There, Cara began to explore and deepen her relationship with God<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs I was learning about God, I was working with my animals,\u201d she told Guideposts<\/em>. \u201cI realized I could correlate a lot of what I was trying to figure out about God with that farm work<\/a>. I could get my questions about God<\/a> answered by comparing my relationship with the animals.\u201d <\/p>\n

In her newest book, Fields of Grace<\/em>, Cara shares the spiritual lessons she learned on her farm<\/a> and how readers can incorporate those lessons into their daily life. Cara shared a few of those profound lessons with us. <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. God provides what you need. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    While caring for a pony named Tucker, Cara fed him Rice Crispie treats as a special snack. \u201cIt made him happy,\u201d she said, \u201cbut then it made him very sick.\u201d Cara stopped feeding Tucker the snack and he got well again. She realized this was a lesson in how God knows what we need<\/a>\u2014sometimes better than we do. <\/p>\n

    \u201cThis is why God doesn\u2019t give us everything we want when we pray,\u201d she said. \u201cEven if it makes us happy, it\u2019s not always good for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

    1. Let God lead you. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Cara says her work with horses taught her about the role of leadership in faith<\/a>. \u201cA horse\u2019s focus is on survival,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t step up and be a leader to them, then they\u2019re going to take over.\u201d However, it was always easier on the horses if Cara led them. Cara connects this to how God leads us in our lives<\/a>. \u201cIt taught me to listen to God and surrender myself,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

      Leading her horses also showed Cara how trusting in God\u2019s goodness will help us keep moving forward. \u201cHe’s directing us,\u201d she said. \u201cWe can trust where He\u2019s taking us, no matter what is happening in our life. He is in control<\/a>.” <\/p>\n

      1. Be in the moment with God <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Going on trail rides with her horses is one of Cara\u2019s favorite activities. Even these leisurely strolls taught her an important spiritual lesson. One day she took a trail ride after putting a fresh shoe on her horse. She was worried<\/a> the shoe wouldn\u2019t hold and kept looking down to check on it. \u201cI realized if I kept waiting for the shoe to drop, I would miss out on everything that\u2019s happening on the trail ride,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

        Her trail rides were a chance to take in the beauty of nature<\/a> and remember why she moved to the farm in the first place. \u201cThese rides show me the amazing creation that God has given us<\/a>,\u201d she said. \u201cTo enjoy it, I had to stop waiting for that shoe to drop and just be in that moment with God.\u201d <\/p>\n

        1. Personal space can deepen your faith. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Life on a farm is not without its challenges, especially when you treasure your alone time<\/a>. \u201cI have a busy life,\u201d Cara said. \u201cWe have two teenagers that we homeschool.\u201d\u201d She says working in the barn is her time to be with herself. “I love spending time with my animals<\/a>,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m thankful for that. That is my time.\u201d <\/p>\n

          Cara says the quiet is vital to working on her relationship with God–whether it\u2019s praying, meditating, or just taking a moment to listen<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of calmness out in the pasture,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is quiet enough that I can hear God.\u201d<\/p>\n

          1. Understanding comes from patience and listening. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Many of the horses Cara works with on her farm are rescue animals<\/a>, which means they require a lot of extra care. \u201cYou get these horses with a past,\u201d Cara said. \u201cSome of them have trauma. You just have to be patient enough to see what helps them along, what makes them tick, what don\u2019t they like, how do they learn. You have to do that patiently<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

            One horse, Gus, was particularly skittish and wary of people. It took a lot of patience but Cara finally got him to trust her. \u201cI just needed to take the time to understand him,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

            Cara likens this to the relationship we all have with God. \u201cWe are trying to figure out who God is,\u201d she said, \u201cand why He does the things He does. We don\u2019t always get those answers, but as we learn to trust Him, we learn to accept that He has our back.\u201d <\/p>\n

            1. Connect with God daily. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Another thing that helped Gus trust Cara was spending time together every day. The consistent time was key to them better understanding one another. \u201cIf I only spent an hour with Gus a week\u2014just like if I only went to church for one hour a week, or if I only worked on my marriage with my husband for an hour a week\u2014there\u2019s no relationship there,\u201d Cara said. <\/p>\n

              This taught Cara a valuable lesson in taking time for God every day<\/a>, even if briefly. \u201cConsciously take that time, make it a part of your routine,\u201d she said, \u201cso that over time, you know God better and your relationship with Him becomes more genuine.\u201d <\/p>\n
