We know it\u2019s something that our <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/positive-living\/giving-up-grudges-on-rosh-hashanah\">faith commands<\/a> us to do. We know that forgiving someone is <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/positive-living\/paths-to-fulfillment\/forgiveness\/for-a-healthy-heart-forgive\">good for our spirit<\/a> and health. Still, our anger, our sadness, our pain are powerful forces to overcome. Crimes committed against us and our loved ones stoke the fires of revenge, and sometimes a deluge of prayer is needed to snuff it out.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what makes the story of Linda White and Gary Brown published on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/crime\/2015\/06\/gary_brown_and_linda_white_he_killed_her_daughter_she_found_a_way_to_forgive.html\"><em>Slate<\/em><\/a> this week so remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>The story begins with a \u201cMysterious Ways,\u201d a conversation Linda had with her daughter, Cathy. Linda discovered that Cathy\u2019s fianc\u00e9e was actually the son of the pediatrician the White family used to see before they moved from Houston to Colorado. Cathy\u2019s soon-to-be father-in-law had actually treated her as a little girl. Linda and Cathy shared a laugh about the remarkable \u201ccoincidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the last moment Linda and Cathy would share together. Days later, tragedy struck in the form of two 15-year-old boys who\u2019d escaped from a nearby rehab center. The boys abducted Cathy, assaulted her, and killed her. They were arrested soon after. Each was sentenced to more than 50 years behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>At a support group for crime victims, Linda didn\u2019t find solace. \u201cI didn\u2019t feel like anyone was talking to me about healing, about moving forward. It was just about getting even,\u201d she told <em>Slate<\/em>. \u201cI didn\u2019t want my life to be like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her faith guided her to take a different path. She found a booklet written by a United Church of Christ minister, Virginia Mackey, which preached something called \u201crestorative justice,\u201d which focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders through reconciliation with victims. In other words, meet and help heal the broken boys who perpetrated this horrific crime. One of those boys was Gary Brown.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a stunning story, and one in which the role of faith in Linda\u2019s healing process is crystal clear.
