One of his favorite sweets was angeletti, a Christmas cookie his aunt Lee made with anise and luscious lemon icing sprinkled with colored sugar. Its name translates to \u201clittle angels.\u201d I\u2019m not Italian, but I decided to surprise John with my own recipe for angeletti\u2014and he said they tasted just like home.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"blue-lines\">Ingredients<\/h3>\n<table border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"1\" cellspacing=\"1\" style=\"width: 600px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><strong>Cookie Dough<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"300\">4 c. flour<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">1 c. unsalted butter<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">2 Tbsp. baking powder<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">1 c. sugar<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">\u00bd tsp. salt<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">6 large eggs<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">3 tsp. finely ground anise seed<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">1 tsp. vanilla<br \/>\n\t\t\t\u200b<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><strong>Icing<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">5 c. confectioner&#8217;s sugar<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">3 Tbsp. water<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">1 large lemon (\u00bc c. juice)<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">green and red sanding sugar<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">1 \u00bd tsp. lemon extract<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\"> <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3 class=\"blue-lines\">Preparation<\/h3>\n<p>1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and anise.<\/p>\n<p>2. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, Angeletti Cookies mixing well. Add vanilla and mix in. On low speed, gradually add flour mixture just until combined.<\/p>\n<p>3. Using a teaspoonsized cookie scoop (#60), scoop 20 dough balls onto cookie sheets. Bake 15 minutes. Cookies will be golden. Cool on a wire rack. Refill cookie sheets 4 times more.<\/p>\n<p>4. Combine confectioner\u2019s sugar, juice from the lemon, lemon extract and water. (Add more water if needed.)<\/p>\n<p>5. When cookies are cool, spread icing over the top of each with an offset spatula.
