After realizing we hail from the same hometown\u2014Wilmington, North Carolina\u2014trading favorite local haunts and forgiving each other for being alumni of rival high schools, the lead singer confesses something most artists are not wont to admit: he actually reads reviews.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/post\/matt-maher-on-playing-for-the-pope-and-his-new-album\/\"><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-size: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial;\">READ MORE: MATT MAHER ON PLAYING FOR THE POPE<\/span><\/a><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201cLast night, a review popped up on Twitter and I knew I shouldn\u2019t read it but I had to,\u201d Roy says. \u201cI clicked on it and it was the best review I\u2019ve ever been given for any record I\u2019ve ever made.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">We agree he shouldn\u2019t read any more\u2014in case others prove to be more critical\u2014and start unpacking<span class=\"apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><em><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Georgia&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\">Unashamed<\/span><\/em>, the Christian band\u2019s 9th studio album, a marked departure in sound from any of their previous records.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"> Building 429 \u2013 whose members include Roy, Michael Anderson, Jesse Garcia and Aaron Branch \u2013 is known for their catchy lyrics, sweeping anthems and fist-pumping beats. Their latest album showcases all of that along with a more vulnerable side to the men.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Songs like \u201cBe with Us Now\u201d speak to the late-night theological conversations on tour buses the band had where they questioned why people would ever be ashamed of their faith.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201cThe idea of the title of the record is that you have to be unashamed of your story of brokenness before you can be truly unashamed of the Gospel,\u201d Roy says.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Roy has seen this play out in his own life.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">A child of divorce, Roy was constantly on the move while living with his mom and stepdad. When he felt something missing from his life, he decided to move to Texas to live with the father he only saw once a year. What he hoped would be a fresh start turned out to be something frightening.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">A power lifter who was struggling with the aftereffects of extensive steroid use, Roy\u2019s father was, at times, abusive.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201cIt was a really weird thing,\u201d Roy says. \u201cI knew my dad loved me, but I was scared to death of him at the same time.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Those early years were tough; Roy faced bullying at school and at home for his Christian beliefs. His father didn\u2019t share his faith and had a hard time connecting with him because of it, but the one thing they did bond over was music.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:7.5pt;margin-left:0in;\nline-height:17.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201cHe bought me a drum set. He put a guitar in my hand when he had no money. He provided a place for me to learn how to play music.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Roy also attributes his own work ethic to his father\u2019s strict regimen.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/post\/big-daddy-weave-brings-beautiful-offerings\/\">READ MORE: BIG DADDY WEAVE BRINGS &#8216;BEAUTIFUL OFFERINGS&#8217;<\/a><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201cHe was a marine drill sergeant,\u201d Roy jokes. \u201cHe woke me up every morning at 5 a.m. and we ran 3 miles together. Even when I was tired, wanting to go back to bed, he\u2019d say \u2018It\u2019s all a matter of attitude.\u2019 That has served me so well. I would not be a part of Building 429, 15 years later if I didn\u2019t have that in my head; \u2018Don\u2019t Give up, don\u2019t quit, It\u2019s all a matter of attitude.\u2019\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"> Roy addresses his evolving and complicated relationship with his father on the track, \u201cStronger.\u201d He sings about the bullying he endured and ends with, \u201cMaybe someday we\u2019ll find a way to love each other.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201cA long time ago, I decided that I was not going to hate my father for who he could never be, I was going to love him for who he was,\u201d Roy says.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">The singer, who is also a father now, says he\u2019s been grateful for the chance to heal his relationship with his dad and to witness the amazing change he\u2019s undergone \u2013 his father is now a man of faith, a fan of Roy\u2019s music and a doting grandfather to Roy\u2019s two children.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Roy hopes that by laying down his shield and baring his own story through this latest record, he\u2019ll help others realize that they\u2019re not alone in their struggles.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt; line-height: 17.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201cThat is the great lie of this life; that you\u2019re the only one,\u201d Roy says. \u201cAs believers, we\u2019ve bought into this [idea] that \u2018Sunday morning best\u2019 means that we should come into Sunday morning service perfect. The church is not for perfect people. Our story of brokenness is not what disqualifies us for use by God, it\u2019s what<span class=\"apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><em><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Georgia&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\">qualifies<\/span><\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>us.
