{"id":18577,"date":"2026-03-11T06:20:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T06:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/uncategorized\/horehound-candy\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T06:06:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T06:06:07","slug":"horehound-candy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/entertainment\/recipes\/dessert\/horehound-candy\/","title":{"rendered":"Horehound Candy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A piece of horehound candy is like a trip back in time.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"blue-lines\">Ingredients<\/h3>\n<table border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"1\" cellspacing=\"1\" style=\"width: 600px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>3 qt. of water<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">1 t. lemon juice<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">\u00bc c. dried horehound steams, leaves and flowers.<\/td>\n<td>1 t. of butter<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>3 c. brown sugar<\/td>\n<td>Superfine sugar to roll candy in<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>1 t. cream of tartar<\/td>\n<td> <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3 class=\"blue-lines\">Preparation<\/h3>\n<p>1. Bring water to a boil and remove from the heat.<\/p>\n<p>2. Add the horehound and let it steep for 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>3. Strain and let settle.<\/p>\n<p>4. Pour 2 \u00bd c. of liquid into a heavy saucepan<\/p>\n<p>5. Add brown sugar, cream of tarter and lemon juice and bring to a boil.<\/p>\n<p>6. When liquid reaches 240 degrees, add butter.<\/p>\n<p>7. Continue to boil without stirring until mixture reaches 312 degrees. Remove from heat and pour mixture into a shallow buttered pan.<\/p>\n<p>8. Let cool enough to roll into small pieces; roll pieces in superfine sugar.<\/p>\n<p>8.
