I leashed up Gracie, filled our water bottle and headed for the nearby Appalachian Trail, hiking north towards Benedict Pond and Beartown State Forest.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-49738\" alt=\"\" height=\"616\" src=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/muddy_gracie.jpg\" style=\"float:right\" width=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/muddy_gracie.jpg 472w, https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/muddy_gracie-340x444.jpg 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/>Leashed because I don\u2019t trust her. Not that she\u2019ll run off but that she\u2019ll find mud. I made that mistake last week and look what happened. (See Exhibit 1, right.) I had to take the rest of the day off just to get her clean. It wasn\u2019t going to happen again. <\/p>\n<p>The first mile or so is a slog, equivalent to climbing 50 flights of stairs according to my iPhone. Then the trail flattens out as it winds through the forest and runs along a farmer\u2019s field. The cows weren\u2019t out this morning for Gracie to bark hello to. We pressed on. We hit a patch where the air was scented by wildflowers and the birds were in full song. Yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/pets\/how-a-dog-can-teach-you-to-live-in-the-present\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a God-given morning<\/a> for sure.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we came to a section that had been washed out by last night\u2019s thunderstorms. Mud. Stinky mud. Gracie stared longingly. \u201cWe\u2019re turning around,\u201d I said. I had to induce her with bits of dried bison treats. <\/p>\n<p>On the way down we passed a young couple huffing and puffing their way up, loaded down with camping gear. I nodded. \u201cYou only have about a half mile to go,\u201d I said. A second later the man turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey,\u201d he said. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/users\/edward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAre you that guy?\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n<p>I stopped. \u201cWhat guy would that be?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, the guy in <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/guideposts-readers-our-biggest-blessing-and-inspiration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that little magazine.\u201d  <\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m rarely recognized, especially in the East, so this was a shock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean <em>Guideposts<\/em>?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah,\u201d the woman said. \u201cI recognize your dog. You\u2019re even prettier in person!\u201d (This was addressed to Gracie, not me.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou read the magazine?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night we pitched our tent on a platform at the shelter on East Mountain,\u201d the woman said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know it,\u201d I said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone left some magazines in the hut, and we grabbed a couple to read in our tent. It was raining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not churchgoers or anything like that,\u201d the man added, \u201cbut we enjoyed some of the stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled. \u201cI always ask if there was one you especially liked,\u201d I said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d said the woman. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/emotional-and-mental-health\/how-singer-michelle-williams-copes-with-depression-and-finds-joy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cThe one by Michelle Williams about her depression. <\/a>My sister has depression. I have that issue in my pack to give to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s great. You can always send her a link to the story from our site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe I\u2019ll do that. Coverage isn\u2019t great out here, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With that they were on their way. \u201cWatch out for the mud!\u201d I called.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/entertainment\/travel\/the-joy-of-travel-after-a-pandemic-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I imagine a lot of you are vacationing this month<\/a> and bringing your <em>Guideposts<\/em> along. I know some readers like to save their issues but if you\u2019re not one, why not leave your magazine behind? Maybe whoever picks it up might not be a churchgoer or anything like that but they may enjoy the stories.
