Today I\u2019m going to share some of the coping tricks I\u2019ve learned as a military mom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)  Disagree gracefully.<\/strong><br \/>\nI now have the ability to smile and nod\u2014even when I don\u2019t agree with the person across from me. I learned early on that announcing I had a child in the military didn\u2019t always bring the positive response I thought it deserved. I also discovered that arguing with those who didn\u2019t have a positive response got me nothing but frustrated. So I developed the talent of looking pleasant and engaged even when I was seething with hostility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)  Learn the lingo.<\/strong><br \/>\nI now speak another language. It\u2019s not an official language, but military lingo definitely sounds foreign unless we have a loved one who serves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)  Practice patience.<\/strong><br \/>\nDates and times for visits home are general targets, not promises. One of the first things I learned was that military precision doesn\u2019t really apply in time-driven situations. This isn\u2019t something your child can control, so be patient. He\u2019s more frustrated by this than you\u2019ll ever be.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/life-advice\/finding-life-purpose\/a-single-mom-paints-tributes-to-our-veterans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Read More: A Single Mom Paints Tributes to Our Veterans<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>4)  Welcome everyone.<\/strong><br \/>\nI learned to accept and love the friends my military child brought home with him on leave. Those in the military don\u2019t make a lot of money. And leave times are often short\u2014even during the holidays. This means that military families get the opportunity to be family to those who can\u2019t make it home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5)  Use a military filter.<\/strong><br \/>\nI learned to run everything military-related through a filter of patience. There\u2019s lot out there that can be frustrating, but getting irritated doesn\u2019t help anyone. By knowing snafus will happen, we can often forestall adding fuel to an already volatile situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6)  Carry a cell phone. Always.<\/strong><br \/>\nI developed the ability to never go anywhere without my cell phone\u2014especially during deployments. Those serving don\u2019t always have the option of calling back if we don\u2019t answer, so we learn to always have our phones within arm\u2019s reach. <\/p>\n<p><strong>7)  Be generous.<\/strong><br \/>\nI had to develop the ability to share. Our son had other people who cared about him, so when he was at home, I couldn\u2019t be stingy with them about the time he had to share.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/daily-devotions\/devotions-for-good-health\/faith-to-overcome-the-darkness-of-depression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Read More: Faith to Overcome the Darkness of Depression<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>8)  Write letters.<\/strong><br \/>\nI learned how to write letters again. Some of them were sent as emails, but many were physical letters. It\u2019s just not possible to carry an email with you on patrol, so I made sure my son had tangible evidence of just how much I loved and missed him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9)  Become a prayer warrior.<\/strong><br \/>\nI became a warrior too\u2014a prayer warrior. When we have a child in the military, we enter into a war of epic proportions, and our role isn\u2019t minor.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, my son wasn\u2019t the only one with things to learn when he enlisted in the military.
