For cats living on the streets of a major city, life can be hard and dangerous. Finding food and shelter from the elements is often a struggle. Even if they are lucky enough to be adopted, many of these feral cats<\/a>\u2014used to defending themselves and surviving on their own\u2014won\u2019t adapt well to being family pets.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why for the past 10 years the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) in Washington, D.C., has been taking care of the city\u2019s community cat colonies, which are protected by law, by trapping, neutering and releasing feral cats\u2014placing them in homes only if they\u2019re adoption candidates. In 2015 the HRA started mapping out a program to address the needs of cats that couldn\u2019t be returned to their outdoor homes after neutering but that were also not adoption candidates. The idea of a working cat program<\/a> grew into what Blue Collar Cats is today.<\/p>\n

The program was launched to provide unsocialized felines with a purpose while keeping them healthy and safe. \u201cOur main goal is to give a cat that has been living outside a good outcome,\u201d says Erin Robinson, HRA\u2019s community cat program manager. \u201cWe know that becoming a Blue Collar Cat helps these felines lead fulfilling, happy lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

This new initiative in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area is modeled after barn-cat programs that have long existed in suburban and rural settings for feisty felines who like hunting and prefer to live outside. While cats have been working in stables, warehouses, nurseries and even breweries for a while now, the HRA wanted to focus on more urban areas, similar to programs in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City.<\/p>\n

Since February 2017, the organization has placed 117 cats\u2014all spayed or neutered, microchipped, ear-tipped and vaccinated\u2014with businesses and homeowners. Blue Collar Cats are permanently placed at no cost with the understanding that their human employers will provide food, water, shelter and vet care for the rest of the kitties\u2019 lives. \u201cThe program has been wildly successful and supported,\u201d Robinson says, adding that many people are seeking a natural and more effective way to curb D.C.\u2019s high rat population. \u201cNow, we actually have a waiting list of people!\u201d<\/p>\n

These working kitties play a variety of roles. Take Patty and Wednesday, who control the rodent population in a Maryland prison. Or Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid (@patiocats), who keep rats from creeping into their employer\u2019s D.C. home. Blue Collar Cats are even working outdoors at some of the city\u2019s restaurants<\/a>, where shelter is offered on the eateries\u2019 back patios.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re interested in hiring one of these mousers but aren\u2019t a cat person, that\u2019s not a problem. While some Blue Collar Cats might have a friendly demeanor, the majority of them aren\u2019t interested in being your pal. They\u2019re content to keep their distance and focus on their work.<\/p>\n

Though hunting prowess varies from cat to cat, even the laziest employees get the job done, Robinson says. Their presence alone keeps rodents away. As the HRA website puts it, \u201cRats are smart and word spreads quickly that your business is no longer a safe place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even Robinson is amazed by the success of Blue Collar Cats. \u201cAt first, we didn\u2019t know what to do for these cats that we knew couldn\u2019t be indoor pets<\/a>,\u201d she says. \u201cNow we do. We\u2019re helping them through a more creative, nontraditional solution\u2014and they\u2019re happy as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n
