\u201cPapaw, is Izzie going to die?\u201d my seven-year-old granddaughter, Carolyn, asked, cradling her pet rabbit in her arms. Izzie was already full grown when she joined the family and had been Carolyn\u2019s closest companion for the past four years.<\/p>\n

Recently Izzie had stopped eating. We went to the veterinarian that morning, and the news wasn\u2019t good. The vet told me the rabbit would most likely pass by the end of the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m afraid so. She\u2019s lived a good life, but it\u2019s time for her to leave this world,\u201d I told Carolyn.<\/p>\n

She looked up at me, teary-eyed. \u201cWill it hurt her when she dies?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I assured her. \u201cShe\u2019ll fall into a deep sleep and stop breathing.\u201d It was hard to see my granddaughter feeling so sad<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Carolyn\u2019s voice was no more than a whisper. \u201cI don\u2019t want Izzie to die. She\u2019ll be all alone with no one to care for her. What will she do? Where will she go?\u201d<\/p>\n

Suddenly I was six years old again, wondering about those same things after my dog, Champ, had died. \u201cIf Champ isn\u2019t here anymore, where is he?\u201d I had asked my mother.<\/p>\n

Now I told Carolyn exactly what my mother had told me. \u201cShe\u2019ll go to the Rainbow Bridge<\/a>,\u201d I said, gently stroking Izzie\u2019s soft coat.<\/p>\n

Confusion<\/a> clouded my granddaughter\u2019s face. \u201cWhat\u2019s the Rainbow Bridge?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s where pets go when they die. There they have all the best food and clean water they want,\u201d I said. \u201cAll the animals are friends, and eventually they\u2019re reunited with the people who love them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carolyn still looked troubled. Lord, I asked, help me comfort my granddaughter<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Izzie nestled deeper into Carolyn\u2019s arms, taking short labored breaths, her eyes closed. \u201cBut what if she can\u2019t find the bridge?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat will never happen,\u201d I said, echoing my mother\u2019s words. \u201cThere is a boy holding a golden horn who stands at the bridge to help the pets find their way.\u201d<\/p>\n

A faint smile crossed Carolyn\u2019s face. \u201cHe must be an angel<\/a> with a magic horn.\u201d<\/p>\n

That evening, instead of putting Izzie in her cage, Carolyn set a soft blanket next to her own bed for her rabbit. \u201cGo to sleep, Izzie,\u201d she whispered. \u201cWhen you wake up, you\u2019ll be at the Rainbow Bridge. Please don\u2019t forget me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometime during the night Izzie left this world.<\/p>\n

The next morning, with my granddaughter\u2019s help, I built a small wooden box. Carolyn wrapped Izzie in her blanket and laid her inside. \u201cI want to bury her under the oak tree that I can see from my window.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carolyn held the box and quietly watched me dig Izzie\u2019s burial place. As I lifted away a shovelful of soil, she cried out. \u201cPapaw, stop! There\u2019s something in there!\u201d<\/p>\n

I peered into the hole, but I didn\u2019t see anything. Carefully I removed more soil by hand. Then I found it\u2014a small ceramic figurine of a boy.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, Papaw! The little boy is holding a gold horn!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe must have been placed here just for you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Carolyn nodded. \u201cIzzie found the bridge<\/a>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She keeps the little figurine on her nightstand, a reminder that she will see her beloved rabbit again one day, at the end of the Rainbow Bridge.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
