I prided myself on being a good neighbor<\/a>. My husband, Charles, and I knew everyone who lived along our rural road. Walking that road now, I thought about how we all relied on each other. We picked up mail for peo\u00adple on vacation, lent out tools, watched each other\u2019s children. Each house I passed held a friendly association.<\/p>\n

Except Kelly\u2019s.<\/p>\n

It hadn\u2019t always been this way. At one time, Kelly and I had had a good relationship. Our children were close in age and often played together. Our husbands were buddies. I never went by her house without waving or stop\u00adping to chat if I saw her outside.<\/p>\n

Not anymore. If Kelly was out in her yard when I walked or drove by, I acted as if I didn\u2019t see her. As if there were a big wall between us. At first it felt sat\u00adisfying to let Kelly know what I thought of her. Today the sight of her house just made me sad.<\/p>\n

How did things go wrong? It had all started with a cat<\/a>. A stray who turned up in my driveway. That wasn\u2019t unusual. I already had two stray cats I\u2019d adopted as well as a dog. But this cat was aggressive. He drove my own cats away from their food bowls on the porch and hissed at me when I tried to shoo him off.<\/p>\n

Imagine my surprise a few days later when Kelly announced she was taking in the cat. \u201cI think he\u2019s sweet,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t even know that Kelly liked cats. She\u2019d never had one before as far as I knew. Living with Kelly didn\u2019t make the cat any friendlier. He constantly showed up on our porch, stealing our cats\u2019 food and picking fights. \u201cThat cat\u2019s out of control,\u201d I said to Kelly angrily over the phone one day. \u201cI\u2019ve about had it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s always perfectly sweet with us!\u201d Kelly said, getting defensive. \u201cI had no idea you disliked him so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the first brick in the wall be\u00adtween us. Things just got worse from there. We never talked about that phone call, but I couldn\u2019t stop thinking about it. Maybe I could have been more diplo\u00admatic about that cat, but Kelly should have been more sorry. If anyone was go\u00ading to apologize<\/a>, it should be her! The tension grew until one night I got my own angry phone call. After midnight!<\/p>\n

\u201cHello?\u201d I said, half-asleep.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour dog has been barking all night<\/a>!\u201d Kelly said. \u201cHe woke us up. Please keep him quiet!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I said. \u201cMy dog isn\u2019t barking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust keep him quiet,\u201d she said and hung up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho was that?\u201d Charles muttered. \u201cWhat time is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the middle of the night,\u201d I said. \u201cBut Kelly thought it was a good time to accuse our dog of waking her up. Do you hear him barking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Charles said, already falling back asleep.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s it, <\/em>I thought. I\u2019m never speak\u00ading to Kelly again.<\/em><\/p>\n

And I hadn\u2019t. Not in months. And I felt pretty miserable about it. Not to mention petty<\/a>. What must God think of all this? Some good neighbor I am, <\/em>I thought, drawing closer to Kelly\u2019s house. It hurt my heart and my spirit to admit it.<\/p>\n

This time, as I walked by Kelly\u2019s house, my feet slowed, almost involun\u00adtarily. I allowed myself to turn toward it. Just as I did, I saw Kelly come out to her driveway. For a second, we just stared at each other. I wanted so much for this wall between us to come down. She looks just as miserable as I feel, <\/em>I thought. I could sense God nudging me<\/a> to do what was right. How I needed that nudge!<\/p>\n

I swallowed hard and walked toward Kelly. I\u2019ll ask her if we can start over, <\/em>I thought. I\u2019ll tell her how much I\u2019ve missed her\u2026how much our friendship means to me.<\/em><\/p>\n

Words weren\u2019t necessary. As soon as we got close enough, Kelly and I found ourselves opening our arms and hugging each other close. It was no co\u00adincidence that she\u2019d stepped out onto her driveway at the very moment I was walking by. No coincidence at all that our friendship had been renewed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
