I knew I hadn\u2019t given it to him and that I didn\u2019t have any in my purse, so I asked, \u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d He pointed behind him to the pharmacy we\u2019d just exited. \u201cI picked it up in there.\u201d Yeah, in there where we hadn\u2019t paid for it.<\/p>\n<p>We walked on to the car, but instead of putting Jeremy in his car seat in the back, I sat him in the front seat next to me without starting the motor, so the two of us could talk. I had a gazillion things to do that day, but taking advantage of this moment <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/?p=11796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to teach character<\/a> to my young son had just moved to the top of my to-do list.<\/p>\n<p>I explained to Jeremy that we couldn\u2019t just take things from stores without paying for them. Tears welled in his eyes when he realized he\u2019d done wrong. I looked at my precious boy and I said, \u201cHere\u2019s what we have to do. We have to take that back in the store. Mama\u2019s going to ask for the manager, and I want you to tell him that you took it, and you\u2019re sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We walked back to the store, and I asked for the manager. \u201cMy son has something to tell you,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy held out the lip balm and said, \u201cI took this, and I\u2019m sorry.\u201d The manager handled it beautifully, and a little boy learned an important lesson.<\/p>\n<p>My son is now 40, with children of his own, but he still clearly remembers that day. And, now, as I watch him stand in the pulpit preaching the gospel, I\u2019m so grateful that those character traits I tried to teach him took root in his heart and life, and that he\u2019s now teaching them to my beloved grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>Family is the cornerstone of our society. We can impact our world by instilling character in our children\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/parenting\/children\/jen-hatmaker-on-the-benefits-of-positive-parenting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by being examples<\/a> of men and women of character.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dear Lord, remind me that little eyes are watching and little ears are listening as I go about my day. Help me to be a person with stellar character\u2014for them, and even more importantly, for you. Help me to instill those traits in these precious little ones you\u2019ve loaned to me.
