Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.<\/em> (Hosea 6:3)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a full day in our home school classroom, and the boys want to play outside. It\u2019s warm enough. The sky is shaded gray, but there\u2019s an excess of energy in this house and I learned long ago that it\u2019s best to set that sort of thing free.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo I need a jacket, Mom?\u201d Gabriel asks.<\/p>\n

\u201cA light one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know where my other shoe is?\u201d Isaiah asks.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder the chair on the sun porch.\u201d<\/p>\n

I find my jacket, too, because I can\u2019t resist being outdoors. The dog hears the commotion and dashes to the porch, tail turning helicopter-style. I bend to help Zay with his shoe, but soon Gabe is dressed and ready and he charges out the door. He moves across the patio but then stops fast.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom!\u201d he calls. \u201cIt\u2019s raining! We can\u2019t play!\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m still lacing a high-top, but I look out the porch door and see raindrops smattering the sidewalk. It\u2019s not raining hard, but it\u2019s enough, and I don\u2019t want wet boys before dinner.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on in,\u201d I call. \u201cWe\u2019ll play outside tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gabe comes in and Zay frowns. I pull his shoes off and toss them in the basket by the door.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when the scent of rain rushes in.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s heavy and balmy. It\u2019s clean and fresh. It\u2019s something that we haven\u2019t experienced for many months. It comes through the open porch windows and fills the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cGuys,\u201d I say. \u201cIt\u2019s the scent of spring.\u201d<\/p>\n

I push the door wide and let this blessing roll in.<\/p>\n

I call for Samuel, and soon he\u2019s rumbling down the steps. At first he thinks it\u2019s odd, his brothers and me on the swing on the sun porch, being still and breathing deep. But we slide over and he joins us, too.<\/p>\n

We enjoy the scent of hope.<\/p>\n

The scent of promise.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the rich, sweet scent of new things to come.<\/p>\n

We stay like that for a good while. Watching the drops fall on the patio bricks outside. Being quiet. The old swing creaks with gentle motion. Greyhound Flash has fallen asleep at our feet, and he\u2019s content, too.<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t get to play outside today.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s all right.<\/p>\n

God\u2019s goodness came right on in.<\/p>\n
