I’d recently moved to Oklahoma when Garth Brooks popped the question. No, not that one. It would be a while before he got down on one knee and proposed to me in front of 7,000 people. This was a more private request, one that gave me goosebumps nonetheless.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoney,\u201d he said one October night, \u201cI\u2019ve been thinking maybe we could do Thanksgiving<\/a> with my family. What if I invited them over?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sounds wonderful,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne more thing,\u201d he said. \u201cCould you do the cooking? You know how to make everything, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d I said, trying to project confidence. \u201cI\u2019d love to.\u201d What else could I say? I was proud of my talent in the kitchen\u2014I love it when somebody who only knows me for my singing discovers I can cook too. How could I admit that at the age of 38 I\u2019d never made Thanksgiving dinner on my own?<\/p>\n

The holiday was so special for our family that even if I was touring, I made sure to come home. But I just assisted with the feast. Mama and my older sister, Beth, were in charge of the turkey, the sides and the pies. They\u2019d be cooking back home in Monticello, Georgia, and here I was in Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many people are we talking about?\u201d I asked casually.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout fifteen,\u201d Garth replied. \u201cNothing fancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifteen people for a turkey dinner<\/a> with all the trimmings? He made it sound as easy as whipping up a bunch of pimiento-cheese sandwiches.<\/p>\n

That night I got on the phone to Mama. How should I cook the turkey, how would I know it was done, what all went into Grandma Lizzie\u2019s cornbread<\/a> dressing anyway?<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re making this way too complicated,\u201d Mama said. \u201cKeep it simple.\u201d Simple? This was a big deal! It was my chance to prove to Garth\u2019s family that I was more than some chick singer. That I could make a warm, happy home for him and his three daughters. I didn\u2019t want to blow it.<\/p>\n

I took out a notebook. \u201cHold on, Mama, let me get this down. How many hard-boiled eggs go into Grandma Lizzie\u2019s dressing? What\u2019s the right ratio of cornbread to white bread?\u201d Then it occurred to me. \u201cMama, can you just send me the recipe?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI would, but it\u2019s not written down,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s all in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n

I should\u2019ve known. I come from a long line of fabulous cooks, but the knowledge was passed down from generation to generation in the kitchen, not on paper. There are casseroles Mama taught Beth and me to make that she learned from watching Grandma make them for Granddaddy when he came in from working the fields.<\/p>\n

And Daddy too. He knew his way around the kitchen\u2014and the grill. If there was a fundraiser in town, people would ask, \u201cIs Jack making his Brunswick stew<\/a>?\u201d or \u201cIs Jack barbecuing the chickens?\u201d<\/p>\n

Every recipe in our family has a story. We still laugh about the time Beth put too much ranch dressing in her Super Bowl Sunday cheese ball. My dad renamed it \u201ccheese wad,\u201d and that\u2019s what we call it to this day.<\/p>\n

Or the year my career took off and I was looking for Christmas gifts for folks in the music business. Mama made a special batch of her cheese straws<\/a><\/strong>. We got a kick out of treating the movers and shakers of Nashville to something that had been made in little Monticello, population 2,000.<\/p>\n

Food was how we showed our love. Once I came down with a bad case of the flu in Oklahoma. I swear I wouldn\u2019t have recovered if it hadn\u2019t been for an emergency shipment of Mama\u2019s chicken noodle soup<\/a>, packed in dry ice (where did she find dry ice in Monticello?).<\/p>\n

How was I going to do Thanksgiving on my own? Just the thought of it made me ache for home. \u201cRemember, with the turkey,\u201d Mama was telling me, \u201cexactly one hour at five hundred degrees. Then turn off the oven and don\u2019t open the door till the oven cools. It might be another five or six hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got it,\u201d I said, closing my notebook. No one\u2019s ever going to believe this<\/em>, I thought, least of all Garth<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Sure enough, he looked at me incredulously. \u201cYou do what with the turkey?\u201d<\/p>\n

I explained again. \u201cIt comes out perfect and you don\u2019t even baste it. Mama\u2019s been cooking it this way for years. It\u2019s the most tender turkey I\u2019ve ever tasted.\u201d<\/p>\n

But what if it didn\u2019t work when I cooked it? Maybe Thanksgiving wasn\u2019t a moveable feast. Even the place didn\u2019t feel right. Garth was living in a bunkhouse while his new ranch house was being built. We\u2019d have to eat at card tables\u2014card tables!<\/p>\n

And Daddy wouldn\u2019t be here to lead us in grace and recognize God for the blessings he\u2019d bestowed on us. Would I feel that deep sense of love and connection without holding hands with my family and giving thanks together<\/a>?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll do the shopping,\u201d Garth offered. Well, that was one thing I wouldn\u2019t have to worry about.<\/p>\n

A few days before Thanksgiving Garth set out with my list. Turkey, carrots, celery, onions, beans, greens, potatoes, saltines for the dressing, buttermilk, white bread, cornmeal, eggs, canned cranberry sauce, butter, flour, shortening, sweet potatoes and pecans for the pies\u2014I\u2019d bake those the night before.<\/p>\n

Garth\u2019s girls would help set the tables and serve the food. But I was going to do all the cooking.<\/p>\n

I spent almost all Wednesday in the kitchen, chopping, prepping, baking, studying my notes. By the time I took the pies out of the oven, it was after midnight. I could put in the turkey now.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s the turkey?\u201d I asked Garth.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait till you see it,\u201d he said. He opened the door to the freezer and proudly showed me the rock-hard bird.<\/p>\n

\u201cGarth, it takes days to thaw a turkey! We\u2019ll never be able to eat this one tomorrow.\u201d Even if I stood over it with a hairdryer all night. I sank down in a chair, trying not to burst into tears. \u201cWhere are we going to find a turkey at this hour?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry, Miss Yearwood,\u201d he said (he likes to call me that). \u201cThe grocery\u2019s open twenty-four hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t wait for Garth. I jumped up, grabbed my purse and ran to my car. I wasn\u2019t about to let him get the turkey. Who knew what he\u2019d come back with? I got to the store and dashed to the meat department, praying they wouldn\u2019t be sold out.<\/p>\n

There in the cooler was a beautiful fresh turkey<\/a>, the very last one. Triumphantly I carried it to the checkout.<\/p>\n

Back at the bunkhouse, I preheated the oven to 500 degrees. I prepped the turkey the way Mama told me and put it in the oven. The last thing I did was put duct tape across the door and write \u201cDo Not Open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thanksgiving morning I cooked the beans and greens, whipped up the mashed potatoes, and, yes, I took the turkey out of the oven. It looked as good as Mama\u2019s. I couldn\u2019t resist taking a sliver of white meat and popping it in my mouth. Mmm, tasted as good as Mama\u2019s too!<\/p>\n

Next, the pan juices went into the gravy and, of course, Grandma Lizzie\u2019s famous dressing.<\/p>\n

Soon everyone was gathered around the tables. \u201cShall we pray?\u201d Garth said. He took my hand and, on the other side, I held his brother Jerry\u2019s. We bowed our heads.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are so grateful today for all the blessings you\u2019ve brought us,\u201d Garth said. \u201cFor our family and friends, for the chance to get together…\u201d The last thing I heard him give thanks for was \u201cthe food we eat and the hands that prepared it.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands. And really, those of everyone who had taught me what good cooking was all about: Mama and Daddy, Grandma Lizzie and Beth. I felt connected to them as deeply as ever, connected by the love that makes you want to give the best of yourself.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t need to prove myself to Garth\u2019s family. All I had to do was open my heart<\/a> (and my kitchen) and share that love with them.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmen,\u201d we said and dug in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the most delicious turkey,\u201d said Jerry. \u201cHow did you cook it?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Garth. \u201cIt\u2019s a family secret,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019d be glad to tell you\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n
