Which of these tips can reorient and uplift you today?<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Use Your Body<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Experts in trauma recommend \u201cembodied practices\u201d as part of the healing process. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/how-the-bible-can-inspire-you-to-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moving in intentional ways<\/a>, whether through cardiovascular exercise or mindful practices like yoga, empowers people by grounding them in their bodies rather than leaving them feeling trapped in overactive minds.<\/p>\n<p>When you are feeling disconnected and helpless, try taking <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/breathe-in-love-breathe-out-stress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some deep, focused breaths<\/a>. Do a \u201cbody scan\u201d in which you pay attention to each part of your body and notice how it feels or do some other movement that can help empower you by doing what trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk calls \u201cbefriending the sensations in your body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Focus on Inner Strengths and Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all have resources within us, such as memories of comfort and safety, experiences of being powerful and courageous,\u201d writes Laurel Parnell, a trauma specialist and the author of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/drlaurelparnell.com\/books-by-dr-laurel-parnell\/tapping-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tapping In<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese memories, qualities and images are stored in our body-mind network and can be accessed, activated and strengthened.\u201d Take a moment to identify some of your strengths and inner resources. Focus on them next time you are feeling stressed or helpless. <\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Start and Finish Something (Anything)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At certain moments during the coronavirus closure, I have confronted a sense of helplessness by finding something very small to do\u2014and then doing it. It is important that the task be small, like emptying the sink of a few dishes, sorting through one stack of t-shirts or reading one short chapter of a book. It isn\u2019t important what the \u201caccomplishment\u201d is, the goal is to experience any amount of the positive, empowering feeling of having completed a task.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Be Decisive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Personal empowerment is sometimes a matter of decisiveness. Positive people are generally thoughtful and methodical in <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/emotional-and-mental-health\/the-benefits-of-being-a-slow-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considering different choices at any given moment<\/a>, but Lucy Hone, the author of <em>Resilient Grieving<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/15\/health\/resilience-trauma-emdr-treatment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently told <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/15\/health\/resilience-trauma-emdr-treatment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> <\/em>that it is empowering to focus on one simple question with each decision we make: \u201cIs this helping me or harming me?\u201d Narrowing the field of decision-making can transform helpless passivity into <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/life-advice\/managing-life-changes\/how-to-look-forward-to-a-positive-future-in-any-circumstance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">positive, active empowerment<\/a>.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With large, global stressors continuing to make their energy-draining presence known, many of us might be struggling with feelings of helplessness.
