Research shows that social isolation takes a toll on health, well-being and quality of life, especially as we get older. That\u2019s why the Good Samaritan Society developed Kin Ministry, an innovative program that coordinates in-person, phone and video-chat connections between isolated seniors and volunteers from their faith community. Even though \u201ctechnology can be an important part of the solution for loneliness,\u201d says Denice Dengler, Kin Ministry\u2019s manager, \u201cpeople still want and need human connection.\u201d Active listening is the key, according to Dengler and Barb Schwery, executive director of BeFriender Ministry, which trains the volunteers. Here are their tips for becoming a better, more active listener:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do some self-reflection. <\/strong>We each have our own communication style, Schwery says. How have your life experiences shaped how you listen and communicate? What were things like in your family growing up? What is your role in life now? Also, consider how day-to-day occurrences affect your interactions. If someone cuts you off in traffic, say, how might that affect your conversations with colleagues later that day?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meet the other person where they are. <\/strong>\u201cIf you visit someone who\u2019s grieving, for example, they might not want to talk about it at first,\u201d Schwery says. \u201cMaybe they want to talk about gardening instead. Letting them lead the conversation builds trust.\u201d They\u2019ll talk about what\u2019s really on their minds when they\u2019re ready to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Respond with understanding. <\/strong>In conversations, \u201cpeople typically think, \u2018What do I need to say next?\u2019 rather than \u2018How do I make sure I understood?\u2019\u201d Schwery notes. To better understand someone\u2019s story from their perspective, restate what you think you heard. For example: \u201cSounds like you really miss your daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Think caring, not curing. <\/strong>You\u2019re not there to teach or give advice. \u201cJust be a listening presence,\u201d Dengler says. Remind yourself, \u201cI don\u2019t have to have all the answers. It\u2019s not up to me to fix this. I\u2019m going in to learn.\u201d Asking open-ended questions gives the other person the opportunity to choose how to respond.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be nonjudgmental. <\/strong>It\u2019s healing to talk about your experiences, thoughts and feelings without being judged or criticized.
