The result was <em>The Happiness Project, <\/em>a bestselling book, as well as several follow up books and a podcast <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/podcasts\/\">Happier with Gretchen Rubin<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rubin\u2019s newest book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/books\/outer-order-inner-calm\/about-the-book\">Outer Order, Inner Calm: Declutter and Organize to Make More Room for Happiness<\/a> <\/em>applies her down-to-earth, practical style to decluttering. Rubin spoke with <em>Guideposts.org <\/em>about the importance of outer order, why we should stop trying to organize and how to find a <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/emotional-and-mental-health\/7-decluttering-tips-from-joshua-becker\/\">decluttering <\/a>method that works for you. Here are six of Rubin\u2019s best decluttering tips:<\/p>\n<h4>1. Outer order matters<\/h4>\n<p>One of Rubin\u2019s \u201csecrets of adulthood\u201d is that <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/emotional-and-mental-health\/myquillyn-smith-shares-her-best\/\">decluttering<\/a> is about much more than aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can all agree that in the context of a happy life, something like a <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/how-to-declutter-your-kitchen-in-5-simple-steps\/\">crowded closet<\/a> or a messy desk is inconsequential,\u201d Rubin said. \u201cAnd yet for most people\u2026outer order does contribute to inner calm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rubin said that when people feel in control of their physical space, they feel more in control of their life in general. As she wrote in <em>Outer Order, Inner Calm<\/em>, \u201cBy getting rid of the things I don\u2019t use, don\u2019t need, or don\u2019t love\u2026I free my mind\u2014and my shelves\u2014for what I truly value.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>2. Don\u2019t get organized<\/h4>\n<p>Rubin\u2019s second tip might sound counterintuitive, but she has found that for most people, organizing does not lead to inner calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften when people want to get organized they run out to the store and they buy filing cabinets and strange kinds of hangers and binders,\u201d Rubin said. \u201cA lot of times they&#8217;re just buying stuff for their stuff to jam more clutter into place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of trying to organize your belongings, Rubin recommends asking yourself: Do I even really want this?<\/p>\n<h4>3. It doesn\u2019t have to happen all at once<\/h4>\n<p>Rubin emphasized that decluttering doesn\u2019t have to be finished in a day or even a weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe underestimate what we could do if we did a little bit consistently over the long term,\u201d Rubin said.<\/p>\n<p>Setting aside thirty minutes a day to work on clearing your space can make a huge difference in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you just start and keep up, you will be surprised how much progress you can make in a fairly limited amount of time,\u201d Rubin said.<\/p>\n<h4>4. Manage decision fatigue<\/h4>\n<p>One thing that Rubin has noticed prevents people from effective decluttering is decision fatigue. Making decisions about what to keep, toss or donate is draining, and after a long day at work or caring for loved ones, can seem impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t think you can avoid the decision fatigue,\u201d Rubin said. \u201cBut you can manage it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An easy way to manage decision fatigue is to adopt a test. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/emotional-and-mental-health\/marie-kondos-6-top-decluttering-tips\/\">Marie Kondo uses the \u201cdoes is spark joy?\u201d<\/a> test. Rubin likes to ask \u201cDoes this energize me?\u201d Simplifying the decision-making process to a yes or no question can remove some of the trepidation people experience when thinking about decluttering.<\/p>\n<h4>5. Ask yourself these three questions<\/h4>\n<p>Rubin\u2019s second set of questions for determining if an item should stay or go is simple. Ask yourself: Do I need it, use it or love it?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I don&#8217;t love it, use it or need it then that&#8217;s what I get rid of,\u201d Rubin said.<\/p>\n<p>Rubin doesn\u2019t find it helpful to stick to rules like \u201cif you haven\u2019t used something in one year, throw it out\u201d because there are items\u2014like ski pants or evening clothes\u2014that may not be used regularly, but are useful. Instead, ask yourself if you use the item in question for its intended use when the opportunity arises.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cneed it\u201d category is for things necessary for your home to function and the \u201clove it\u201d category is for those things that have sentimental value, but may not be useful. If an item isn\u2019t needed, loved or used\u2014put it in the giveaway pile.<\/p>\n<h4>6. Reality check with a photo<\/h4>\n<p>When you live in a space it can be easy to become blind to the clutter. One way Rubin suggested to open your eyes to the true state of your space is to take a picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking a photograph can be helpful because then [you can ask] does this look like an orderly desk? Is this where I want to work?\u201d Rubin said.<\/p>\n<h4>7. A simple trick to maintaining order<\/h4>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve cleared your space, Rubin advised adopting the \u201cone minute rule\u201d to keep your space clear. The idea behind the rule is simple: if you can do something in less than one minute, don\u2019t put it off, do it now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you can file a piece of paper in less than a minute go ahead and file it,\u201d Rubin said. \u201cIf you can hang up your coat, go ahead and hang it up instead of throwing it over a chair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These might seem like small things, but over time, Rubin said they are big contributors to keeping your space decluttered\u2014and maintaining inner calm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The name Gretchen Rubin has become synonymous with happiness.
