Sharon Owen woke up dreaming she had been in a war. In a sense, she had been. After contracting pneumonia and spending a month in a coma, she could no longer walk, talk, sit up or even swallow. \u201cI was fighting for my life,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\n

I chose to say \u2018I can.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 Sharon Owen, Good Samaritan Society \u2013 Bonell Community resident<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Unable to move, Sharon had to decide if she was going to live her life in the care of someone else, or work to regain her health. \u201cA lot of people just don\u2019t try,\u201d she says. \u201cThey say, \u2018I can\u2019t.\u2019 I chose to say, \u2018I can.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Finding Help<\/strong><\/p>\n

When she arrived at Good Samaritan Society \u2013 Bonell Community in Greeley, Colorado, as an assisted living resident, Sharon had started to walk again but needed a cane. Wellness director Matt Biedron and his employees immediately started her in exercise classes that were part of the location\u2019s wellness program. The focus was on getting her to walk with more confidence. Before long, Sharon\u2019s cane was gone.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople around here were very encouraging to her,\u201d
\nMatt says of Sharon. \u201cThey noticed her progress and
\nwere able to help push her along.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cSoon after that I got her into my higher level fitness class,\u201d Matt says, \u201cso that she could build her strength and her confidence and her coordination.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharon just kept going. From balance classes to chair exercises, and even Crazy 8 \u2013 a fast-paced circuit with eight stations \u2013 she\u2019s working out nearly every day.<\/p>\n

The wellness classes have helped her regain her strength so quickly that just a few months after arriving at the center, Sharon has moved from assisted living to a senior apartment. She also volunteers on campus.<\/p>\n

Not only is Sharon participating in Senior Olympics contests on campus, but she\u2019s winning medals. Her specialties are pushups and ball tosses. \u201cI\u2019m not very good at golf,\u201d she says with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Attitude is Everything<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sharon credits Matt and the staff at Bonell Community for her rapid success. \u201cMatt is a great teacher,\u201d Sharon says. \u201cPatient. (He) makes it fun. Makes coming to class great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt says Sharon\u2019s attitude has a lot to do with her success.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s done everything I\u2019ve asked her to do. It\u2019s her effort that has made the big difference here.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says others can look at Sharon and see how rehabilitation can transform the body.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe encourages and motivates folks on this campus,\u201d Matt says. \u201cShe just wanted to have a chance, and I think you let others see that and it helps them persevere and go, \u2018Why not me?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
