Among non-medical interventions, calming, mindful practices are supported by research, such as one study that showed an immediate benefit to those who practiced a \u201cbody scan\u201d technique. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/232917501_Immediate_effects_of_a_brief_mindfulness-based_body_scan_on_patients_with_chronic_pain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The study reported<\/a> reduced pain levels and distraction caused by pain after the practice.<\/p>\n<p>A body scan is a mental exercise in which you move your attention over your entire body and notice sensations without trying to change or \u201cfix\u201d them. This is an easy technique that you can practice anywhere, without any special equipment, apps, or even a quiet space (though <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/how-the-bible-and-abide-can-help-you-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guided meditations<\/a> and quiet, peaceful surroundings can certainly help you relax).<\/p>\n<p>At first, a body scan might seem counterintuitive as a way to manage chronic pain\u2014if you are focusing your attention on parts of your body that are in pain, won\u2019t that exacerbate the feeling? Psychologists and other researchers suggest the opposite; <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/addiction-and-recovery\/how-interoceptive-awareness-can-help-your-body-relax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">building awareness<\/a> of specific sensations in your body, even if they are uncomfortable, will help you keep your pain in perspective and, over time, learn to manage it.<\/p>\n<p>A body scan is easy to do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find any comfortable position\u2014lying down, sitting, or standing comfortably all work.<\/li>\n<li>Take a few <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/the-powerful-gift-of-a-deep-breath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deep breaths<\/a>, bringing your attention away from eternal stimulation and into your inner world.<\/li>\n<li>Choose whether to start at the top of your head or the bottom of your feet. Direct your attention to either place in your body.<\/li>\n<li>Notice any sensations in your body as you mentally scan yourself either from top down or bottom up. These can include temperature, muscle tension, achiness, alignment, or simply the feeling of one part of your body connecting with the adjacent parts.<\/li>\n<li>When you encounter an <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/parenting\/coping-with-uncomfortable-feelings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uncomfortable place<\/a> in your body, breathe deeply and focus on that area.
