Mister Rogers is remembered for his <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/entertainment\/movies-and-tv\/how-mr-rogers-spread-gods-love-everywhere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insatiable devotion to the values of kindness<\/a>, friendship and emotional literacy, and he is universally viewed as a positive role model.<\/p>\n<p>But Rogers\u2019 most lasting gift\u2014even and maybe especially to the adults who, like me, grew up watching his wonderful world of make-believe\u2014is <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/entertainment\/movies-and-tv\/7-fun-facts-about-mister-rogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the way he taught<\/a>, again and again, that all feelings are real, important and valid. He embodied the idea of authentic positivity, which teaches that only when we embrace the full range of our emotions, including the so-called \u201cnegative\u201d feelings of anger, sadness, loneliness and fear, can we learn to walk through life with a genuinely positive outlook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe host considered all feelings natural \u2014 including the dark ones \u2014 and believed they don\u2019t need fixing,\u201d the philosophy professor Mariana Alessandri recently wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/28\/opinion\/mister-rogers-neighborhood.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>. Rogers lived by the adage, \u201cwhat is mentionable is manageable,\u201d and again and again he modeled ways to acknowledge difficult feelings like frustration and sadness\u2014and handle those feelings in healthy ways, like playing music, running fast to release energy and asking questions <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/how-mister-rogers-neighborhood-championed-children-with-disabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to face fear with facts<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Mister Rogers\u2019 Neighborhood<\/em> was purportedly a show for children,\u201d Alessandri wrote. \u201cBut I think Rogers also meant it for adults.
