{"id":21171,"date":"2026-03-11T10:40:01","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T10:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/uncategorized\/are-visions-of-heaven-just-malarkey\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T06:11:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T06:11:38","slug":"are-visions-of-heaven-just-malarkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/emotional-and-mental-health\/are-visions-of-heaven-just-malarkey\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Visions of Heaven Just Malarkey?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI did not die, I did not go to heaven.\u201d With those words, <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/kid-named-malarkey-lied-about-going-to-heaven-1679813030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teenager Alex Malarkey<\/a> upended the religious publishing world \u2013and threw a healthy heap of skepticism on the genre of near-death-experience literature.<\/p>\n<p>His bestselling book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Boy-Who-Came-Back-Heaven\/dp\/1414390211\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven<\/em><\/a>, \u201cco-authored\u201d with his father after he was paralyzed in an accident at the age of six, was untrue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I went to heaven because I thought it would get me attention,\u201d Alex admitted, in <a href=\"http:\/\/pulpitandpen.org\/2015\/01\/13\/the-boy-who-came-back-from-heaven-recants-story-rebukes-christian-retailers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an open letter<\/a> sent to Christian bookstores. (According to <a href=\"http:\/\/amomonamission.blogspot.com\/2014\/04\/the-boy-who-came-back-from-heavennot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex\u2019s mother<\/a>, he didn\u2019t write any of the book, which, since he was six at the time, should be obvious.)<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"390\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-41755\" style=\"width: 275px; height: 390px; margin-left: 15px; margin-right: 15px; float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/blog_boywho_275_0.jpg\" alt=\"Sun in the sky. Photo by Ig0rZh, Thinkstock.\" \/>But how do you check a story like <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/inspiration\/mysterious-ways\/resurrected-by-a-hallelujah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evangelina Garza\u2019s<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/inspiration\/life-after-death\/to-heaven-and-back\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dennis Hale\u2019s<\/a>? We can speak to those who know them, speak to their doctors, check the details that surround their time \u201caway from this Earth\u201d\u2013but when it comes to checking their vision, we only have their word.<\/p>\n<p>After reading so many of these stories, however, I\u2019m inclined to believe. Not just because some people have returned with knowledge of things in this world they could not have known, like discussions family members had outside the hospital room or events that occurred while they were unconscious.<\/p>\n<p>But because of the transformation these survivors have undergone in life following their recovery\u2013as Dr. Alexander put it, \u201cMy older son, Eben IV\u2026 saw me two days out of the hospital. He said there was like a light shining in me; I was much more present than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t necessarily believe that these people have been to heaven in a physical way, or even seen its true nature\u2013even the authors we\u2019ve featured aren\u2019t 100% sure of that\u2013but I do believe that they\u2019ve each been given an extraordinarily comforting, life-changing experience while on the edge of death.<\/p>\n<p>Considering that\u2019s the moment when the brain is in its most distressed, damaged, incapacitated state, the fact that something beautiful and faith-affirming could emerge from the nothingness is a miracle.<\/p>\n<p>We can never truly know what lies beyond\u2013the Bible itself is maddeningly vague on the subject. But the sum of these brushes with the afterlife tells us that what\u2019s next for our bodies and souls will not be nothingness.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Malarkey didn\u2019t see heaven, but he did survive a terrifying accident, and continues to survive every day with a crippling injury that hasn\u2019t robbed him of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cleveland.com\/medical\/2009\/01\/boy_undergoes_christopher_reev.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hope or a positive outlook on life<\/a>.\u00a0The license plate on his family\u2019s custom van reads, \u201cWil Walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t see heaven, but he still believes in it.<\/p>\n<p>We should all have such faith.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI did not die, I did not go to heaven.\u201d With those words, teenager Alex Malarkey upended the religious publishing world \u2013and threw a healthy heap of skepticism on the genre of near-death-experience literature.
