A short, <em>slow <\/em>run. It\u2019s a habit with me. And the only way I can stick with it is to keep it a habit. To glorify God. In other words, it\u2019s a spiritual approach to making exercise a habit.<\/p>\n<p>The Apostle Paul observed, \u201cDo you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God\u2026?\u201d (I Corinthians 6:19)<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re meant to <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/exercise\/body-soul-fitness-connects-faith-and-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">treat the body with respect,<\/a> to do all we can within our power to keep it healthy and serviceable.<\/p>\n<h3>A Wild Heart History<\/h3>\n<p>As I\u2019ve written before, I have a wild heart history. Have had heart surgery twice in my life, most recently over a year ago. After each \u201cprocedure\u201d (that seems to be the word medical professionals use), I signed up for cardiac rehab.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/living-longer-living-better\/after-heart-surgery-or-a-heart-attack-how-to-recover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In cardiac rehab,<\/a> you work with a nurse, a physical therapist\u2014with a cardiologist on hand if needed\u2014and get exercise three days a week, building back your strength and more specifically, your confidence.<\/p>\n<p>This last time around I figured, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m not going to go running anymore.\u201d On the contrary, the nurse and therapist urged me on. Running is good for my body. And I daresay, for my soul.<\/p>\n<h3>Encouragement to Keep Going<\/h3>\n<p>Their encouragement was a reminder: keep it up, Rick. If you saw me, slowly jogging up and down hills, you\u2019d know I\u2019m not out to win any races. In fact, recently, as I came up that last hill running with a friend, a neighbor exclaimed, \u201cYou look like the very LAST two finishers of the marathon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanks a lot. I decided to take it as a compliment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou must really love to run,\u201d people will say to me. Love is too strong a word. But I love to <em>finish<\/em> a run. That feels good.<\/p>\n<p>The only way I can do it is to make it a habit. It\u2019s inscribed in my head (and heart). Sometimes I do it <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/daily-devotions\/devotions-for-good-health\/cure-for-worry-on-a-morning-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first thing in the morning.<\/a> As the weather gets cold, I prefer going later in the day, when I won\u2019t freeze. I could do it in a gym, but I don\u2019t really like jogging on a treadmill. I prefer the great outdoors. A chance to get closer to the Creator.<\/p>\n<h3>Learning While Running<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes I listen to a Bible podcast. My favorite is called <a href=\"https:\/\/thebiblefornormalpeople.com\/podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cThe Bible for Normal People,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0full of interesting guests and scholars. I can learn while I run. I can grow.<\/p>\n<p>Good habits are, in turn, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/a-simple-morning-habit-to-improve-your-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">habit-forming.<\/a> I find it easiest if I simply make it a rule. The Bible offers commandments for us to follow. And the more you follow them, the easier it is to observe them. They become habits. So try a spiritual approach to making exercise a habit.<\/p>\n<p>Like that everyday jog.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I imagine <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/daily_devotional\/jesus-rescues-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus there,<\/a> as I\u2019m huffing and puffing up a hill. \u201cOkay, Jesus, I\u2019m doing this for You.\u201d To love the Lord with all your heart, body, mind and soul. \u201cI\u2019ll keep doing this, Jesus, until you tell me to stop.\u201d Or a doctor says as much.<\/p>\n<p>I like walking, too.
