Back in those days I was pretty miserable myself.<\/p>\n<p>I was in Nashville, the capital of country music, where I\u2019d come from my home state of Mississippi to try my luck as a songwriter. By the late \u201870s I was beginning to make a living <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/?p=9275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from music<\/a>, but I was also making a mess of my life.<\/p>\n<p>I was a Christian\u2014or at least I said I was\u2014but you couldn\u2019t tell from the way I acted. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/addiction-and-recovery\/how-this-country-music-singer-overcame-alcohol-addiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I got into booze<\/a> and drugs and had all sorts of tawdry affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Finally I hit rock bottom. I was on the road <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/pets\/her-guitar-eases-the-loneliness-of-these-shelter-animals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">playing guitar<\/a> at a club when the club\u2019s owner saw what bad shape I was in. One night she confronted me and made me look at how I was destroying myself.<\/p>\n<p>I sat there, half-drunk in that noisy, smoke-filled room, pondering her words. Right there I prayed, \u201cLord, if You\u2019ll get me out of these bars, I\u2019ll live my life for You.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks later I got a call from a friend back in Nashville wondering if I\u2019d be interested in a job with a song publisher. The Lord kept His end of the prayer, but it was still years before I kept mine.<\/p>\n<p>That was the beginning of my long road back. Eventually I gave my life to Him and allowed Him to start His work in me. Because of Him I was able to stop doing the things that were doing me in and started writing songs for Him.<\/p>\n<p>In the lyrics of one of those songs, a husband asks his wife what he should give her for standing by him\u2014diamonds, furs? And she replies with the title of the song, \u201cI won\u2019t take less than your love.\u201d Then a son asks his mother what he owes her for everything she\u2019s done for him. And he gets the same answer.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, a man asks the Lord how he can repay Him for the life He\u2019s given him\u2014what is the price? And God gives the same reply: \u201cI won\u2019t take less than your love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man who asked that question was Paul Overstreet. I\u2019d found that it wasn\u2019t enough just to say <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/faith-prayer-devotions\/stories-of-faith-faith-prayer-devotions\/do-you-need-to-believe-in-god-to-pray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I believed in God<\/a>, or even tell others about Him, while going my own way. I had to give Him everything\u2014no more, no less.
