When Jesus modeled prayer to His early followers, He included the confession of sin and request for forgiveness in the short recipe we call \u201cThe Lord\u2019s Prayer.\u201d<\/a> In doing so, Jesus modeled a daily soul-sweep, one that follows the request for today\u2019s bread with a plea for today\u2019s pardon. It is a kind of clearing of the daily mess we make, a wise preventive measure that keeps us from hoarding sins to our soul\u2019s detriment. It is a daily do-over. A treasure of grace in the single word: forgive.<\/p>\n

When Jesus told His followers to pray \u201cForgive us our sins\u201d in His model prayer, He was prescribing not only a phrase but an attitude\u2014a humble awareness of our need for mercy and grace, and a grateful embrace of forgiveness and soul cleansing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some people, however, struggle to receive God\u2019s forgiveness<\/a> because they cannot forgive themselves. A friend of mine tearfully confessed that he could never forgive himself for something he had done. I listened and then said something without thinking (I hate it when that happens\u2026and I often wish it would happen less frequently than it does):<\/p>\n

\u201cWow,\u201d I said, \u201cyou must have really high standards.\u201d<\/p>\n

He blinked at me through his tears. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you believe God can and will and does forgive even the worst sinner, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight.\u201d The word came out slowly, as though he suspected a trap.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you can\u2019t forgive yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded. \u201cRight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich seems to indicate that your standards are higher than those of the holy, righteous God of the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n

He blinked some more.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich maybe\u2014I\u2019m just spit-balling here\u2014says that either you or your sin is bigger in your mind than God is.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head. \u201cNo, I\u2014I\u2019m not saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if God says you\u2019re forgiven, and you say what you did is unforgivable\u2026you both can\u2019t be right. So it really sounds like you\u2019re saying you know more than God. Or your standards are higher than God\u2019s. Or maybe you<\/em> are.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t answer but continued to shake his head.<\/p>\n

I tried again. \u201cI think the issue is whether you can accept what God says instead of what you think\u2014whether you can believe that God\u2019s mercy<\/a> and grace are bigger than your sin and guilt, whether you can really trust His promise that if you confess your sins He will forgive your sin and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.\u201d<\/p>\n

It took some more time and discussion, but before we were done talking, his resistance melted away, and he was able to accept God\u2019s forgiveness.<\/p>\n

When we pray, \u201cForgive us,\u201d we can accept the Father\u2019s forgiveness and claim His cleansing work in our hearts. We can leave our past in our past<\/a>. We can check our baggage and walk away unencumbered. We can experience the blessing expressed by hymn writer Albert Orsborn:<\/p>\n

Wash from my hands the dust of earthly striving;
\nTake from my mind the stress of secret fear;
\nCleanse thou the wounds from all but Thee far hidden.
\nAnd when the waters flow, let my healing appear.<\/em><\/p>\n
