But these qualities can also allow you to pour everything\u2014and then more\u2014into caregiving tasks, often to the exclusion of your own needs and feelings. Your physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual reserves can quickly run dry, given all that caregiving requires of you. It is not uncommon for caregivers to isolate themselves socially and to neglect important <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/caregiving\/hope-and-inspiration\/inspiration-and-prayer\/10-quotes-to-encourage-caregivers-to-practice-self-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aspects of self-care<\/a>. Continually putting your loved one\u2019s needs first, while you push aside your own, can easily lead to burnout and even beyond, to more significant compassion fatigue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/caregiving\/resource-center\/how-to-find-time-for-yourself-as-a-dementia-caregiver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Self-care<\/a> is an often-used term for an approach to fighting caregiver stress and burnout. One of the oldest routes to stress reduction is meditation, defined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-meditation-2795927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verywell Mind<\/a> as \u201ca set of techniques that are intended to encourage a heightened state of awareness and focused attention.\u201d The practice goes back to ancient times and is embraced by cultures and religions throughout the world. The numerous proven health benefits of meditation include decreased stress and anxiety; better sleep, memory and regulation of emotions; and lowered blood pressure, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24395196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a>. Meditation can help to cultivate mindfulness, which combats stress and burnout.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is mindfulness for stress reduction?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindful.org\/jon-kabat-zinn-defining-mindfulness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Kabat-Zinn<\/a>, the originator of what is now known as the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, defines mindfulness as \u201cawareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.\u201d Mindfulness cultivated through meditation can help those who practice it to:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Focus on experiences instead of on preconceived judgements and expectations<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Act with deliberation and intention, rather than on \u2018autopilot\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Respond to situations rather than react to them<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Increase awareness of all aspects of a situation, instead of automatically shutting out those that are perceived as confusing or unpleasant<\/p>\n<p>Kabat-Zinn has identified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdx.edu\/students-with-children\/sites\/www.pdx.edu.students-with-children\/files\/7AttitudesofMindfulness.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seven necessary attitudes<\/a> to the cultivation of mindfulness:<\/p>\n<p>1. <u>Non-judging<\/u>, the practice of being an impartial witness by avoiding snap judgements and reactions, and instead observing the situation as it is<\/p>\n<p>2. <u>Patience<\/u>, the ability to allow things to unfold at a natural pace<\/p>\n<p>3. <u>Beginner\u2019s Mind<\/u>, the practice of setting aside experience and expertise to look at something with fresh eyes<\/p>\n<p>4. <u>Trust in yourself<\/u>, your intuition and your feelings<\/p>\n<p>5. <u>Non-striving<\/u>, the practice of setting aside a specific agenda, and simply being as you are<\/p>\n<p>6. <u>Acceptance<\/u> of how things are without judgement of whether things are good or bad<\/p>\n<p>7. <u>Letting go<\/u> of emotions, thoughts and anxieties you\u2019re holding onto, and letting them be<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can I use mindfulness for stress reduction as a caregiving tool?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Practicing mindful meditation for stress reduction can help you to combat compassion fatigue and burnout. Research compiled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2012\/07-08\/ce-corner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Psychological Association<\/a> shows that mindfulness has benefits such as:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 stress reduction<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 increased focus<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 a decreased sense of being controlled by emotions<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 reduced dwelling over unhappy thoughts<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s common for caregivers to neglect their own emotions in order to focus more on their loved ones\u2019 needs. Mindfulness for <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/3-simple-stretches-to-help-you-fight-stress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stress reduction<\/a> is one way to become more aware and accepting of the emotions you may have. Instead of discounting your feelings, you can begin to better recognize their place in your life and more readily come to terms with them.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/living-longer-living-better\/self-care-what-is-it-and-why-should\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-care benefits<\/a>, mindful meditation can also improve the way you care for your loved one. In her book \u201cThe Mindful Caregiver: Finding Ease in the Caregiver Journey,\u201d licensed geriatric social worker Nancy Kriseman explains how mindfulness can help caregivers to become more fully present with their loved ones without disengaging. This can allow for greater attentiveness to your loved one\u2019s experiences, in addition to your own. \u201cEmbracing a healing presence requires you to just be in the moment together,\u201d Kriseman wrote. \u201c[Mindfulness] can help slow you down some so you can make the best possible decisions for your care recipient. It also helps bring more balance and ease while navigating the caregiving journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can I bring mindfulness for stress reduction into my busy schedule?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a caregiver, you have a full plate, and adding mindfulness to it may feel like a lot to fit in. The good news is that there are easy ways to make it a part of your schedule, even on the most hectic of days.
