He was an opening act that night and brought with him a fun onstage personality and some upbeat worship music. But what really stood out was his testimony.<\/p>\n<p>Timmons was diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer and given just five years to live.<\/p>\n<p>That was 14 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember walking in the door with my wife, sitting on the couch and just being dumbfounded,\u201d Timmons tells Guideposts.org of the day he found out about his illness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/post\/living-with-cancer-god-told-her-share-your-story\/\">READ MORE: LIVING WITH CANCER: GOD TOLD HER &#8216;SHARE YOUR STORY&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the heels of the diagnosis came a year\u2019s worth of surgeries and some tough decisions at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had plenty of tears,\u201d Timmons says. \u201cI remember telling my wife \u2018Hey honey, I get it if you don\u2019t want to have kids.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His wife\u2019s response is what turned the tide in terms of how they viewed Timmons\u2019 cancer battle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said \u2018Tim, we\u2019re going to live as though you\u2019re going to be healed.\u2019 That was a little bit of a game changer for us,\u201d Timmons admits. \u201cWe\u2019re either going to believe that Jesus is either good or He\u2019s not, that He\u2019s actually God or He\u2019s not. How are we going to live our lives?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The artist decided shedding his own worries and living for his faith was the way to go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey still say I have four tumors on my liver and that\u2019s wearing out my heart, but Jesus keeps waking me up every single day and I\u2019m still blown away by that,\u201d Timmons says. \u201cI have this fruit of the spirit. In the past I was told, \u2018Try not to worry, you\u2019re a Christian,\u2019 or \u2018You should have more peace because you\u2019re a Christian,\u2019 or \u2018You should be joyful in this situation.\u2019 No, that\u2019s exhausting, thinking like that and trying to be that really good Christian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe point of Jesus is you don\u2019t have to carry all of these awesome Christian burdens anymore. For the first time in my life I have fruit of the spirit. I\u2019m not addicted to worry like I have been my whole life. It\u2019s not because I\u2019m great and I\u2019m doing my quiet time and I\u2019m just so good at being a Christian, it\u2019s just because I\u2019m saying every morning, \u2018Jesus, where is Your work today? I want to join You in what You\u2019re doing.\u2019 It\u2019s changed everything. I have joy that has nothing to do with circumstance. He\u2019s always available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/post\/big-daddy-weave-brings-beautiful-offerings\/\">READ MORE: BIG DADDY WEAVE BRINGS &#8216;BEAUTIFUL OFFERINGS&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Timmons\u2019 hopeful outlook on life comes thanks to his newly revived relationship with God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 6 years ago, Jesus apprehended my heart,\u201d Timmons says. \u201cThe problem is, I\u2019ve known all about Jesus my whole life. I could quote any scripture to you, but I actually didn\u2019t <em>know <\/em>Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The singer\u2019s first album, <em>Cast My Cares<\/em>, was his way of reconnecting with God. His second, <em>Awake My Soul<\/em>, which was released early this month, is a celebration of the love and life he\u2019s discovered in his walk with the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot more joy in this record to be honest because the more I hang out with Jesus, he\u2019s making me joyful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lyrically, the album is a testament to Timmons\u2019 passion to live out his faith. His favorite song on the record, \u201cFinally Breathing,\u201d details the artist\u2019s own relief at shaking off the expectations of religion for a meaningful relationship with God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s this idea that I\u2019ve been taking shallow breaths my whole life, spiritually,\u201d Timmons says of the track. \u201cFor the first time in my life I finally feel like I\u2019m taking deep breaths. My days are not filled with whether I\u2019m happy or sad. Jesus is starting to become enough. He\u2019s becoming a bigger deal than the religion I\u2019ve been a part of my whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Timmons hopes he can be known for more than just his music or his battle with cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer is not my story,\u201d the artist affirms. \u201cWhat a terrible story. If you have something bad happening &#8212; divorce or whatever is happening in your story &#8212; if that defines us, then we\u2019re in trouble. For me, cancer is not my name, nor does it have a hold of me. God is at work in all things. It\u2019s the perspective through cancer, or whatever these things are in our lives, that\u2019s where we find our identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c I want people down the road to say \u2018Because of the God of Tim \u2026\u2019 I want people to look at my life and say, \u2018Not because of cancer, but because that man lives as though he has the fullness of God in him.
