From \u201cI am beautiful\u201d to \u201cI am good at what I do\u201d to \u201cI matter to the people in my life,\u201d these mantra-like phrases are a helpful part of the routine of positive emotional hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>However, positive self-talk isn\u2019t always enough to sustain an upbeat outlook, particularly during a challenging time in life. Particularly for people who suffer from low self-esteem, depression or anxiety, telling yourself everything is going to be ok can feel hollow and inadequate.<\/p>\n<p>According to Melody Wilding, a social worker who has researched happiness and human behavior, positive affirmations work at the level of your consciousness that\u2019s closest to the surface. As she writes in <em>Forbes<\/em>, these statements \u201cdo nothing to contend with the subconscious mind where limiting beliefs really live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first step toward sustainable positivity, Wilding says, is to give yourself permission to feel your feelings\u2014all of them. That includes acknowledging that a stressful interaction at work left you feeling angry, a medical test triggered feelings of worry or a calendar slip-up has you feeling disappointed in yourself. <\/p>\n<p>Wilding recommends a technique called \u201cre-framing\u201d to shift how your mind reacts to those negative feelings. She writes, \u201cYou might re-work your self-talk to sound more like, \u2018I am a work in progress, and that\u2019s okay.\u2019 It\u2019s pointing you in the direction of positive growth and is both realistic and achievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/life-advice\/finding-life-purpose\/how-the-power-of-positive-thinking-lives-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Read More: How the Power of Positive Thinking Lives On<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This advice came to me at just the right time. I am having one of those days where I feel like I am doing too many things\u2014and doing too few of them well. So I put Wilding\u2019s technique to the test, first acknowledging, \u201cI am feeling overwhelmed and unfocused.\u201d Then I created a re-frame: \u201cI am proud that I have accomplished some things today.
