Every breath was a struggle. The doctors hooked me up to some oxygen and tried to figure out what was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Word got out\u2014through church, through the emails my wife sent out, through social media. And the prayers came back. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/?p=15179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prayers for a complete healing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I felt so rotten I couldn\u2019t really pray for myself. I learned that when someone says \u201cI\u2019m praying for you,\u201d that phrase has a double meaning. They\u2019re not only praying <em>for <\/em>you they\u2019re also praying <em>for<\/em> you because you can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>My spirits were pretty low for those first 24 hours. And then something happened.<\/p>\n<p>The second day I was in the hospital, nothing really had changed about my physical shape but I knew\u2014somehow knew\u2014that I was going to get out of that hospital. I wasn\u2019t sure what kind of shape I\u2019d be in, whether I\u2019d have to drag a can of oxygen around for the rest of my born days, but I <em>would<\/em> go home.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks later I did go home. On my own two feet. Without any can of oxygen. It was another three weeks before I was back at work and another two months before I was up and running around the park\u2026<em>slowly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>What I have learned and what I keep relearning is that healing is a gift. You can ask for it, but it comes unbidden. We do all we can to stay healthy but weird things can come out of left field without any warning.<\/p>\n<p>So claim your good health. Claim those prayers. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/how-to-pray-healing-prayers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">And return the favor.<\/a> Pray for those who for so many reasons can\u2019t pray for themselves. \u201cI\u2019m praying for you\u201d has two meanings no matter how you put it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three years ago in September I landed in the I.C.U. with a mysterious lung infection that threatened to take me out. He is the author of several books on prayer, including Finding God on the A Train, Ten Prayers You Can\u2019t Live Without, and Pray for Me. Rick has also published three novels and a history of the Rose Bowl, The Tournament of Roses.
