It was their second time attending a Sunday service. <em>It\u2019s very pretty,<\/em> she thought. But Sarah was having trouble connecting with the sermon. And nobody\u2014not one person\u2014had said hello to them. This was the second church the couple was trying out in their new Connecticut town; they had moved from Wisconsin with their young daughters a few months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, a flood of memories came over Sarah: of her girls\u2019 joyful baptisms, the women\u2019s group she led, the bell choir. <em>I miss <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/holiday-prayers\/the-old-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our old church<\/a>,<\/em> she thought. <em>Will we ever fit in here?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/life-advice\/managing-life-changes\/the-challenge-of-finding-a-new-church-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finding a new church home<\/a> can be challenging. Maybe your family has relocated. Perhaps your longtime church no longer feels comfortable due to leadership changes. Maybe you\u2019ve gotten married or divorced or you\u2019ve recently come to faith.<\/p>\n<p>A Pew Research Center study found that Americans cite the quality of the sermon and a <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/friends\/5-ways-to-welcome-newcomers-to-your-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warm welcome<\/a> as the two most important elements in a new church. But there are many points to consider. Here are some tips to help you find a church where you and your family will thrive.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Do your research<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe internet has made finding a good church much easier,\u201d says Donald Thomas, pastor of Redeeming Grace Church in Cody, Wyoming, and author of <em>How to Find the Right Church: A Complete Guide<\/em>. \u201cYou can quickly see the basics: where the church is, when services are held, special events.\u201d He says the very first thing you should seek out on a church website is the statement of faith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what the church believes,\u201d Pastor Thomas says. \u201cThis is so important that if a church doesn\u2019t have one, you should move on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Look at the church leadership. \u201cCheck out their educational background and ministry experience,\u201d Pastor Thomas says. Listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/stories-of-faith-and-hope\/church-leaders-get-creative-to-serve-their-communities-during-the-covid-19-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online sermons<\/a>. \u201cThey can be very telling. It\u2019s not only the topics but also the way the sermons are delivered. Can you hear passion and a love for <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/god-s-words-are-just-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">God\u2019s word<\/a>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ask people you know to recommend a church. The Pew study found that while many younger folks (ages 18\u201329) do <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/prayers-for-stronger-faith\/worship-without-walls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use the internet<\/a> to research their options, 82 percent of them were also likely to reach out to a friend or coworker. Only 54 percent of people 65 and older would approach someone they know for a recommendation.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Music matters<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/singing-from-the-soul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Music is integral to the church experience<\/a> of many. Anne Marie Rodgers and her husband considered several churches when they moved to Georgia from Pennsylvania, where they\u2019d attended a Church of Christ for decades. They ultimately opted for a United Methodist Church with a strong music and theater program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re a musical family. It\u2019s important to us that there is a pipe organ and at least one type of choir,\u201d she says. \u201cTo us, this is more important than the denomination.\u201d Rodgers is not alone in making a switch. According to the Pew study, mainline Protestants and evangelicals are the Christians most likely to change denominations.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Harney, pastor of Shoreline Church in Monterey, California, and coauthor of <em>Finding a Church You Can Love and Loving the Church You Found,<\/em> believes that a true Christian should be able to worship at any church. \u201cBut some music may distract you\u2026while other <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/entertainment\/music\/the-church-she-calls-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">music may lead you into God\u2019s presence.<\/a> It is a serious consideration. No specific style of music is more spiritual than any other,\u201d he writes. \u201cSome people are stirred to worship when they hear a hymn played by a piano, flute and violin trio or on an organ.\u201d Others, he points out, may get closer to God by \u201can electric guitar, bass and drums being played as loudly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Consider style.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This goes beyond music. Do you prefer a large church, or are you <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/faith-prayer-devotions\/stories-of-faith-faith-prayer-devotions\/one-small-church-doing-something-huge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more comfortable in a small one<\/a>? Though a smaller church can offer an intimate \u201cfamily feel,\u201d it may not have the resources to provide the outreach and social programs that a bigger church can. What about the worship service? Are you happier with a formal liturgy or a more informal atmosphere?<\/p>\n<p>Keep an open mind on worship style, advises Guideposts contributing editor <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/author\/rhamlin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rick Hamlin<\/a>. He grew up attending a Presbyterian church in California but switched denominations after he married. For the past 40 years, he has worshipped at St. Michael\u2019s Episcopal Church on Manhattan\u2019s Upper West Side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took me almost 30 years to fully appreciate the high liturgy, and before I was willing to get ashes on <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/holiday-prayers\/what-ash-wednesday-means-to-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ash Wednesday<\/a>,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Set your priorities.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cFigure out what is most important to you. For me, it\u2019s the sermon and <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/life-advice\/finding-life-purpose\/the-blessing-of-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the music<\/a>,\u201d Hamlin says, adding that there is no such thing as the perfect church. He treasures St. Michael\u2019s vibrant music program, including its Jazz Masses and the adult choir, which is a mix of volunteers and professional singers. He also appreciates the<a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/people-helping-people\/5-ways-churches-can-thrive-by-embracing-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> diverse congregation<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019re so blessed\u2014St. Michael\u2019s has always been a multiethnic community. It\u2019s probably about 20 percent Afro-Caribbean, and now I see a lot more Asians coming in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Think about how you or your family may evolve over the next few years, Hamlin says. Will the church offer opportunities to make meaningful connections? \u201cBring your kids; let them experience the <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/stories-of-faith-and-hope\/vacation-bible-school-why-its-a-summer-tradition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">children\u2019s ministries<\/a> for themselves.\u201d If you are single, you might search out a church with a strong singles ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Are there outreach programs you want to be involved in? \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/caregiving\/family-caregiving\/advice-for-caregivers\/how-helping-others-can-be-its-own-reward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serving people<\/a> is a big part of what it means to be a Christian,\u201d Hamlin says.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Make the most of your first visit.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pastor Harney suggests praying before trying a new church. \u201cAsk God to help you <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/stories-of-faith-and-hope\/a-chance-church-encounter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connect with the people<\/a> in this congregation. Appreciate the differences of each church and celebrate the common expressions of worship and praise.\u201d Allow ample time for your visit. \u201cDon\u2019t just pop in at the last minute and run off after the service. Show up 15 minutes early. Wander around. Pick up some literature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linger after the service. \u201cIt\u2019s fine to wait and see if people reach out to you, but it is also okay for you to greet people and introduce yourself,\u201d Pastor Harney writes. \u201cFeel free to ask questions, to ask for a little tour of the facility or just to chat. Have a positive attitude. Be ready for good things to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let your preconceptions go, Hamlin urges. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/bible-resources\/deepen-your-faith\/4-ways-to-receive-gods-guidance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Let God move through you and speak to you<\/a>. Be aware of how you feel when you are there. Do you feel uplifted?\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Give it time.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pastor Harney suggests visiting a new church for at least a month before even beginning to contemplate whether it\u2019s the right place for you. \u201cIf you are coming from a church you attended for many years, don\u2019t expect the same level of intimacy right away. Be patient. It takes time to <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/make-new-friends-keep-the-old-especially-in-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get to know people<\/a> and find your place in the congregation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pastor Thomas also stresses patience. \u201cIf you\u2019ve checked out the church and it hits all the right points, but you go one time and the sermon bores you\u2014give it another shot. Anyone can have an off day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, avoid running away from your church at the first sign of trouble. \u201cIf you\u2019ve been involved in a church for a while, it\u2019s like a family,\u201d Hamlin says. \u201cThere will be times when something or someone really bugs you. Ask yourself why. Are you projecting a problem of yours onto the church?
