{"id":23149,"date":"2026-03-11T14:17:31","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T14:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/uncategorized\/how-to-start-a-positive-affirmation-practice\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T06:15:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T06:15:41","slug":"how-to-start-a-positive-affirmation-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/how-to-start-a-positive-affirmation-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Start a Positive Affirmation Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> viewers of a certain age love to chuckle over Stuart Smalley, a character played by Al Franken whose schtick was to look at himself in the mirror and say earnestly, \u201cI\u2019m good enough, I\u2019m smart enough, and gosh darn it\u2014people like me.\u201d The title of the ongoing sketch was \u201cDaily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley,\u201d and it was poking fun at the habit of speaking loving, inspiring words to oneself as a way to keep it together in a stressful world.<\/p>\n<p>The joke\u2019s on us, though, because psychologists say <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/life-advice\/tips-to-create-and-sustain-a-positive-attitude\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">positive affirmations actually <em>do <\/em>help us<\/a> stay calm, build confidence and cultivate a sustainably optimistic outlook on life\u2014even in stressful times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we want to start to make less room for the negative thoughts, we have to intentionally practice positive thoughts,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/do-positive-affirmations-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">psychologist Lauren Alexander told the Cleveland Clinic.<\/a> How can we do this\u2014particularly as the stressors of the newly-dawned 2022 press us from all sides? Try these three ways to get started:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)  Affirm Aloud<\/strong><br \/>\nYou might feel kind of silly gazing deeply into your own eyes in the mirror like Stuart Smalley (though I find this technique to be calming and grounding\u2014I practice it while I\u2019m brushing my teeth in the morning). But whether you say your affirmations out loud to an empty room, whisper them under your breath, text them to a friend or post them on the bathroom mirror, being consistent and explicit about what you want to affirm for your life is important to fully <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/daily-devotions\/holiday-devotions\/new-year-affirmations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inhabit those positive reminders.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2)  Don\u2019t Just Say Your Affirmations\u2014Do Them<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cI always tell people that changing their thinking is super important but that what\u2019s really convincing to us, as humans, is when we see a change in behavior,\u201d Alexander said. This means articulating your positive affirmations and then attaching actions to those ideas. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/positive-thinking\/34-positive-thinking-quotes-from-dr-norman-vincent-peale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get in the habit of believing yourself <\/a>when you say, for example, that you can take one step outside your comfort zone today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)  Be Real<\/strong><br \/>\nThe wisdom in Smalley\u2019s funny persona was the word \u201cenough.\u201d Even in his silly presentation, he never fell victim to toxically positive language like, \u201cI\u2019m the best,\u201d or even \u201cToday is going to be a fantastic day.\u201d He\u2019s simply good enough\u2014and so are you.
