Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. described the goal of the boycotts he had led to advocate for desegregation. At a victory rally, he said, \u201cThe end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the Beloved Community. It is this type of spirit and this type of <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/how-martin-luther-king-jr-found-redemptive-love-out-of-anger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love that can transform opponents into friends.<\/a> It is this type of understanding goodwill that will transform the deep gloom of the old age into the exuberant gladness of the new age. It is this love which will bring about miracles in the hearts of men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thekingcenter.org\/about-tkc\/the-king-philosophy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to The King Center,<\/a> King was not the first to use the term \u201cBeloved Community\u201d to describe the ideal to which we should aspire. The term was coined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/royce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">philosopher-theologian Josiah Royce<\/a>, to whose interfaith peace organization <a href=\"https:\/\/kinginstitute.stanford.edu\/encyclopedia\/fellowship-reconciliation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Fellowship of Reconciliation<\/a> King later belonged.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting in these fraught times on the history of the visionary ideal of \u201cBeloved Community,\u201d I am struck by how King didn\u2019t pretend conflict would be absent in a just society. Instead, he recognized that conflict is part of the human experience. In a Beloved Community, he said again and again, we respond to conflict with nonviolent action. Unafraid to disagree\u2014particularly in the face of injustice\u2014and with full acknowledgement of the dignity of all human beings, we can reconcile, evolve and <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/stories-of-faith-and-hope\/martin-luther-king-jr-on-infinite-hope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">come together without violence<\/a> or explosive division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJustice,\u201d said King, is indivisible. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/martin-luther-king-jr-day-a-time-to-open-our-hearts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">And honest, respectful lov<\/a>e can bring about nothing short of \u201cmiracles\u201d in our hearts.<\/p>\n<p>What does \u201cBeloved Community\u201d mean to you?
