Often with no rhyme or reason. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with me?\u201d I\u2019ll ask. \u201cWhy do I feel so blue?\u201d It can linger, too. Not like a cold or a sore throat that you get over in a matter of days. What to do?<\/p>\n<p>Working with a therapist can be very helpful. Although I\u2019ve never had to take medication, I understand that it can offer relief. But for me, prayer is essential. Praying through the depression with <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/emotional-and-mental-health\/how-michelle-williams-faith-helped-her-overcome-depression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the help of Scripture.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Every morning as I eat my oatmeal, I read a few Psalms. I can hold on to a verse and feed on its healing words throughout the day, as nutritious as the oatmeal. Here are a few I\u2019ve prayed over the years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)\u00a0 <em>I waited patiently for the Lord: he inclined to me and heard my cry. (Psalm 40:1)<\/em><\/strong> Waiting. So much of life is waiting. When you\u2019re feeling blue you want God\u2014somebody\u2014to flick a switch and bring the light back into your life. Now, now, now. But there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/daily_devotional\/waiting-for-his-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">power in the mere waiting.<\/a> Give yourself time. Put yourself in a prayerful place where God can find you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)\u00a0 <em>I lift up my eyes to the hills<\/em><\/strong>\u2014<strong><em>from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1-2)<\/em><\/strong> I remember visiting an elderly woman, the widow of my pastor. All she had was a small studio apartment with a view of the mountains. She gestured to view and said, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/daily-devotions\/devotions-for-inspiration\/spirit-lifting-gods-awe-inspiring-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cI lift up eyes to the hills\u2026\u201d<\/a> What a poignant reminder. Healing comes from on high.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)\u00a0 <em>The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)<\/em> <\/strong>Nobody knows better how we feel than God. The Lord has a special calling <em>for<\/em> the brokenhearted, for us when we feel crushed in spirit. What you can\u2019t explain to a loved one, or struggle for words to tell a talk therapist, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/stop-everything-and-talk-with-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can share with God.<\/a> No need to hide anything. The Lord is right there with us, all the more so when we\u2019re suffering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4)\u00a0 <em>But you, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head. (Psalm 3:3)<\/em> <\/strong>Don\u2019t get all caught up in the distractions that fill our days\u2014our phones, emails, the news on TV or our computers. Wherever I look around at a crowd, everybody\u2019s staring down at their phones, heads and shoulders slumped over. The Lord is there to shield us from the worst. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/people-helping-people\/everyday-greatness-his-hope-walks-uplift-the-homeless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">God lifts up our heads.<\/a> Look up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5)\u00a0 <em>You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy. (Psalm 30:11)<\/em><\/strong> Sometimes we forget to mourn. In Biblical times mourning was rigorously practiced. Feeling the excruciating pain of a loss. Feeding it. Sackcloth was a rough, coarse cloth people wore to mark their humility, their suffering. Lowering ourselves, dropping down, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/addiction-and-recovery\/how-gods-mercy-helped-this-pilot-through-addiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asking for God\u2019s mercy,<\/a> can be exactly what allows us to step back into the dance of life. Allowing ourselves to be clothed with joy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Depression. It can come on as quite a shock.
