In my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, there is a church<\/a> atop a hill called Mt. Adams. For more than 160 years, Good Friday worshipers have slowly ascended 85 steps from the neighborhood below to the church\u2019s front doors, pausing to kneel and pray on each step. It\u2019s a practice they\u2019ve repeated year after year, decade after decade, step after step, as a way of kneeling their way to the cross of Jesus. But here’s a way to make that an Advent practice.<\/p>\n

For centuries, followers of Jesus have \u201cknelt\u201d and prayed their way to the manger in the week before Christmas. They do it by means of a series of songs, or chants, called \u201cThe O Antiphons<\/a> or Great Advent Antiphons.<\/p>\n

Many Christians know them as a part of vespers<\/a> or evensong services on each of the last seven days of Advent. Others have encountered them (though they may not have known the connection to the ancient antiphons) as the verses of the Advent hymn, \u201cO Come, O Come, Emmanuel.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, what if during these final days leading up to Christmas, you incorporated this as a new Advent practice? And you \u201cknelt\u201d your way to Christmas Eve<\/a> by singing or praying a different verse of that hymn? The following could serve as a helpful guide:<\/p>\n

December 17 (\u201cO Wisdom\u201d)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

O come, O Wisdom from on high,
\nwho ordered all things mightily;
\nto us the path of knowledge show
\nand teach us in its ways to go.
\nRejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel<\/a> shall come to thee, O Israel.<\/p>\n

December 18 (\u201cO Adonai\u201d)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

O come, O come, great Lord of might,<\/a>
\nwho to your tribes on Sinai’s height
\nin ancient times did give the law
\nin cloud and majesty and awe.
\nRejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.<\/p>\n

December 19 (\u201cO Root of Jesse\u201d)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

O come, O Branch of Jesse’s stem,<\/a>
\nunto your own and rescue them!
\nFrom depths of hell your people save,
\nand give them victory o’er the grave.
\nRejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.<\/p>\n

December 20 (\u201cO Key of David\u201d)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

O come, O Key of David,<\/a> come
\nand open wide our heavenly home.
\nMake safe for us the heavenward road
\nand bar the way to death’s abode.
\nRejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.<\/p>\n

December 21 (\u201cO Dayspring\u201d)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

O come, O Bright and Morning Star,
\nand bring us comfort from afar!
\nDispel the shadows of the night
\nand turn our darkness into light.<\/a>
\nRejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.<\/p>\n

December 22 (\u201cO King of Nations\u201d)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

O come, O King of nations, bind
\nin one the hearts of all mankind.
\nBid all our sad divisions cease
\nand be yourself our King of Peace.<\/a>
\nRejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.<\/p>\n

December 23 (\u201cO Emmanuel\u201d)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

O come, O come, Emmanuel
\nAnd ransom captive Israel
\nThat mourns in lonely exile here
\nUntil the Son of God appear.<\/a>
\nRejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.<\/p>\n
