When the Pilgrims celebrated their first Thanksgiving<\/a> in 1621, half their original group had died. Our forebears were able to give thanks, because they focused on God\u2019s goodness<\/a> and mercy even in the midst of trials.<\/p>\n

Perhaps they took a lesson from Paul and Silas who, while in chains in the prison at Philippi, \u201cprayed, and sang praises unto God\u201d (Acts 16:25). Or perhaps they were simply following the instruction of Philippians 2:5, which says, \u201cYour attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.\u201d It was Christ who, knowing exactly what lay ahead, gave thanks on the very night in which He was betrayed.<\/p>\n

As Christians, we\u2019re called beyond<\/em> simple thanks for the good things God has sent our way. We\u2019re also to give thanks for what He has done for us…and for who He is.<\/p>\n

Scripture<\/a> gives us so many examples of why we are to be thankful:<\/p>\n

We are to be thankful for what God has given us<\/u>:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

1. His \u201cunfailing love\u201d (Psalm 107, numerous verses)
\n2. His grace \u201cgiven you in Christ Jesus\u201d
\n(1 Corinthians 1:4)
\n3. Victory \u201cthrough our Lord Jesus Christ\u201d (1 Corinthians 15:57)
\n4. His \u201crighteous laws\u201d (Psalm 119:62)
\n5. The faith of others to sustain and cheer us (Philemon 1:4)<\/p>\n

We are to be thankful for what God has done<\/u>:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

6. He has \u201canswered me…[and] become my salvation\u201d (Psalm 118:21).
\n7. He has redeemed us. \u201cWhile we were still sinners, Christ died for us\u201d (Romans 5:8).
\n8. He has qualified us \u201cto share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light\u201d (Colossians 1:12).<\/p>\n

We are to be thankful for who God is<\/u>:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

9. \u201cHe is good; His love endures forever\u201d (1 Chronicles 16:34).
\n10. He is \u201cfaithful and just\u201d (1 John 1:9).<\/p>\n

Training our hearts to give thanks does many good things. It gives credit where credit is due. It keeps us from bitterness, arrogance and discouragement. It protects us from letting our lives be defined by what we don\u2019t<\/em> have. It keeps us humble and reminds us of our need for God.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
