Do we not all feel a sense of loss as we\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/how-to-process-grief-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struggled to deal with this pandemic<\/a>? For me, in particular, with my mom\u2019s death this past January, I feel a double dose of grief. Some of these passages of Scripture have helped see me through.<\/p>\n<p>1)<em>\u00a0\u00a0Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.<\/em>\u00a0(Matthew 5:4)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/true-stories-of-answered-prayer\/an-answered-prayer-at-a-mothers-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My mom died at a ripe old age, 93,<\/a> after a few days in the hospital. She went so fast it took all of us by surprise. When my brother showed up at her bedside, she asked, \u201cWhat are you doing here, Howard?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m here to see you,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m just dying,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She knew, just as much as Jesus knows. Dying is a part of life. So is God\u2019s comfort.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0<em>The Lord is near to the broken-hearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.<\/em>\u00a0(Psalm 34:18)<br \/>\nOne of the ironies of sadness and suffering is that <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/family\/3-signs-of-comfort-in-the-midst-of-grief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it can bring us closer to God<\/a>. Think of that first Christmas and who God brought that good news to. Not the rich and well-fed but the shepherds out in their field looking over their flock by night. \u201cBe not afraid,\u201d the angel said.<\/p>\n<p>Be not afraid. Now and always.<\/p>\n<p>3)<em>\u00a0\u00a0I consider that the sufferings of the present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us.<\/em>(Romans 8:18)<br \/>\nOn that last day of my mom\u2019s life\u2014when none of us knew that it would be her last day\u2014a\u00a0\u00a0minister from her church came and read a passage of Scripture, and we prayed together by her hospital bed. Then she said to me very quietly, \u201cI will be in the Lord\u2019s house soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was in a lot of pain and discomfort. We were scheduled to have a meeting with hospice care to discuss palliative relief. Anything that could help. Apparently, those <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/how-to-reduce-anxiety-and-find-calm-in-any-circumstance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prayers and Bible verses mattered<\/a> as much as anything a medical professional could do.<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0<em>\u201cPeace I leave with you; my peace I give to you\u2026Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.\u201d<\/em>(John 14:27-28)<br \/>\nOne way to deal\u00a0with grief is to adopt a characteristic of the deceased. Take on one of their virtues. For my mother it was that habit she had of always looking on <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/life-advice\/how-to-look-ahead-with-real-not-fake-positivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the bright side of things<\/a>. Her relentless positivity.<\/p>\n<p>She would laugh as she said things like, \u201cI felt fine until I turned ninety\u201d or quote that old adage, \u201cOld age is not for sissies.\u201d Then she would attack the morning\u2019s crossword puzzle, congratulating herself for every clue she got right. Dare I point out that right next to her bed was a copy of\u00a0<em>Daily Guideposts?<\/em> A positive companion.<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0\u00a0<em>He will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with shouts of joy.\u00a0<\/em>(Job 8:21)<br \/>\nLaugh now? Yes, even now. When I get together with my siblings\u2014on the phone, on Zoom, in person\u2014we <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/family\/6-little-sayings-of-moms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love to tell stories about Mom<\/a> that make us laugh.<\/p>\n<p>She used to tell us, as kids, \u201cIt\u2019s a good thing that none of you are too good-looking because that way you develop your personality.\u201d I was about 50 when I looked at a picture of us as kids. What was she saying? We were great-looking! In the meanwhile, as we liked to tease Mom, \u201cWe\u2019re still developing our personalities!\u201d She would laugh with us.<\/p>\n<p>6)\u00a0\u00a0<em>Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.\u00a0<\/em>(Psalm 100:1)<br \/>\nThis is a season of music. Christmas carols start flashing all over the airwaves. That used to irritate me. Hearing a carol in a department store in November. \u201cIt\u2019s not Christmas yet!\u201d I would exclaim.<\/p>\n<p>This year I would beg to differ. Don\u2019t we need a little Christmas right now? You\u2019re grieving? Listen to some music. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/a-minute-with-rick-how-to-pray-with-a-christmas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Listen to some carols.<\/a> Hum along to yourself (no group singing right now). It\u2019s a way to get in touch with emotions that are deeper than any words.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you suffered a loss in this last year?
